BLOOMSBURG, Pa – It was the regular season finale and the Huskies needed just a single win on the day to earn their ticket to the postseason. They did just that and even threw in another win for good measure as they closed out their season with a doubleheader sweep over Millersville on Saturday evening.
The opening match of the day was a nail biter up until the very last pitch. The Huskies found themselves down early on three single-run homers from the Marauders, one in the first and two in the fourth inning.
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) showed up when it mattered though, holding the Marauders to zero base hits following their homerun spree, setting up the Husky offense to make a game out of it.
The Husky offense struggled to get on the board, down 3-0 for a majority of the contest, but then came the bottom of the seventh inning.
With two on base,
Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) got the Husky offense rolling on a well-placed single to second base, earning the first Bloomsburg RBI of the day.
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) was next up to bat, needing two more runs to tie it, she needed a good hit. Lenner did just that as she struck a single to left field, and thanks to an error, the Huskies ran in two more runs to tie the game at three.
Now tied and with pressure mounting,
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) answered the call on a sacrifice fly as Lenner ran in the game-winning, playoff-clinching run for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal their first win of the day from Millersville by a score of 4-3.
Game two on the day had a tall task of matching the dramatic finish of the first, but it may have done just that.
As with the opening game, the Huskies found themselves down early.
Trailing by a score of 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth,
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) gave the Huskies a spark with a homer to center field, her seventh on the year.
Bloomsburg would score another run in the following inning on a sacrifice fly from Little to bring the score to 7-3, setting up a dramatic finish for the Huskies.
Faith Persing (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) came in to pitch for the Huskies in the sixth inning and shut down the Marauder offense for the day, holding them to zero runs and a single base hit through the final two innings.
Riding the hot hand of Persing, the Husky offense remained resilient in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Iseminger and
Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic) got the Huskies on base right away and
Jayla Bartholomew (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport) singled to right field on the following play, scoring two runs on a fielding error.
Now down 7-5,
Gianna Gombeda (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) pinch-hit and couldn't have placed a better single to center field; Bartholomew ran in the score to bring the Huskies within one.
With two on base,
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) hit a well-executed bunt as Gombeda took off for home plate. Gombeda reached home on an error and just like that the Huskies were all tied up with the Marauders yet again.
With one out and the game tied, the Huskies needed a clutch hit if they wanted to earn another comeback victory on the day. Little stepped to the plate with two on base and shot a homer to left field.
The dramatic finish saw the Huskies up 10-7 with one inning still to be pitched. Persing sealed the victory in the top of the seventh with a strikeout, foul out, and a fly out as the Huskies came from behind yet again to seal their sweep over Millersville and punch their ticket to the playoffs.
