Late Rally, Then Offensive Explosion Leads Baseball To Two Wins Over Kutztown

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – With the help of some late-inning heroics in the first game that was accompanied by an offensive explosion in the second game, the Bloomsburg baseball team beat Kutztown twice during a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Monday at Danny Litwhiler Field.

The Huskies (11-11, 6-6 PSAC East) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning during the first game and walked things off on a catcher's interference call in a bases loaded situation to beat the Golden Bears (17-11, 4-5 PSAC East) 6-5. Then in the second game, Bloomsburg scored a total of 20 runs across the first five innings as it ran away with a 23-5 victory for its second of the day.

In total, Bloomsburg scored 29 runs on 34 hits during the day – 10 of which were extra-base knocks. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had three doubles during the second game to go along with a home run as he finished Game 2 going 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and three runs scored.

Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) also doubled in the second game, and Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) homered. LaBarbera knocked in four RBI's, scored three times and had three hits while Chasanov went 3-for-6 with three RBI's and three runs scored.

Chasanov also recorded his 200th career hit during the first game of doubleheader by going 2-for-2 at the plate. The center fielder becomes just the sixth player in program history to accomplish the feat.

In Game 1, the Huskies got out to an early lead when Gibble hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Kutztown got that run back in the top of the second after scoring one run on an error with the bases loaded, then the Golden Bears received an RBI single by Brennan Rozich in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

Bloomsburg was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth, however, by piecing together a two-run rally that saw the Huskies score on RBI singles by Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and Alex Ruiz (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) to make it a 3-2 game. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Golden Bears kept the back-and-forth contest going by scoring three in the top of the sixth for the fourth lead change of the game.

The Huskies would have the final answer in the seventh though, and the home half of the final inning started when Gibble reached first base after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Viggiano then doubled during the next at-bat to put runners on second and third with no outs. In the next at-bat, Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) got on base from a throwing error by the shortstop, and that allowed Gibble to score from third. Chasanov walked in the next at-bat, advancing Keenan to second and loading the bases.

Ernst flied out to center field during the next at-bat, but it was deep enough to allow Viggiano to score from third and tie the game up at 5-5. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) walked during the next at-bat to load the bases once again, and then a catcher's interference call during the next at-bat allowed Keenan to score the game-winning run.

Viggiano was 3-for-4 in the first game to go along with one run scored and a double. Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy), Gibble, Chasanov and Wiik all had two hits and Ruiz singled to give the Huskies a total of 12 hits.

On the mound, Cole Coolbaugh (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) picked up his first win of the year after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) started the game for Bloomsburg and had a solid outing, allowing just two runs on five hits in four innings.

In Game 2, Bloomsburg got the rout started by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Huskies broke the game open with seven hits in the inning, which was highlighted by a three-run home run by LaBarbera. Chasanov, Ernst and Keenan all had RBI singles and the other run of the inning came on a wild pitch.

The Huskies added one run in the third and fourth innings, then the team's offense erupted again in the fifth with an 11-run inning. Bloomsburg scored its 11 runs on nine hits and one error, and the frame saw a pair of home runs by Metzger and Chasanov. Additionally, seven different Huskies recorded an RBI in the inning.

Bloomsburg added three runs in the sixth and held Kutztown scoreless for the final three innings as it finished the game with a 23-5 victory.

Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) earned the win after striking out six hitters and allowing one earned run on four hits in five innings. Dylan Lubinski (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) threw one inning in relief, and Casey Fitzsimmons (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross) struck out two hitters in three scoreless innings of work.

The Huskies will return to action with an away game at Clarion on Tuesday. The contest is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
