Football Falls to Shippensburg in Low Scoring Affair

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team faced off against Shippensburg in both teams Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East openers in heavy rain on Saturday. The Raiders came away with the 7-0 win at home over the Huskies to improve to 1-3 on the year and 1-0 in PSAC East action while Bloomsburg dropped to 1-3 and 0-1 in conference play.

The lone score of the game came with 11:21 to play in the second quarter as Shippensburg put together a 17-play, 87-yard drive that took 9:16 off of the clock after starting the drive in the first quarter. Tanner Hess carried the ball one yard to get into the endzone and Jaxon Montross kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

The Huskies were marching down the field on the previous drive but a fumble in the redzone gave the ball back to the Raiders for their scoring drive.

After the Raiders' scoring drive, the two teams combined for three punts for the rest of the quarter before the half ended with Shippensburg at its own 20-yard line.

Bloomsburg was forced to punt on its opening drive of the third and the Raiders missed a 31-yard field goal to keep it a one-score game.

The Huskies got to midfield on their second drive of the fourth quarter but couldn't get the run game clicking and had to punt with 4:07 left in regulation. After the Raiders gave the ball back to the Huskies with 2:55 to play, Bloomsburg was eyeing a game-tying drive. A defensive pass interference call put the ball on the Ship 28-yard lne but a pair of two-yard rushes forced Bloomsburg to use it's last time out. Sophomore QB Ben Ries (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) had Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) in the endzone, though he was tightly guarded and the Raiders' defensive back won the battle to knock the ball out of the hands of Griffen-Batchler, despite a tremendous play on the ball by the sophomore receiver. Shippensburg lined up in victory formation for the 7-0 win.

Defensively, Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) led the Huskies with nine tackles, including 1.0 TFL (3 yards. Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Ky Seesholtz (Mifflinville, Pa./Central Columbia) each had eight stops Ron Long (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) pulled down the Huskies' seventh interception of the season, making the third-straight game with an INT for the Huskies.

Ty Pringle (Cheyney, Pa./Bayard Rustin) led Bloomsburg with 31 yards on the ground while Kaleb Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) had 27. KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was 7-for-14 passing with 44 yards.

The Huskies are back in action next Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a 12:00 p.m. PSAC East showdown. Saturday, September 30 is West Chester's Homecoming and fans are strongly encouraged to buy their tickets on-line ahead of time and carpool to campus for the game.
