Field Hockey Wins Third Straight With 4-1 Victory over Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – For the second-straight game, the Bloomsburg field hockey team scored four goals in route to a 4-1 win over Mercy, Sunday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 3-0 on the season while Mercy dropped its season-opener.

The Huskies dominated offensive possession once again as they out-shot the Mavericks 24-9, including holding a 20-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies had a 14-7 edge in penalty corners.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mercy struck first as time expired in the second quarter going into halftime. The Mavericks got a penalty corner at the 29:46 mark and Rieley Fitzgerald got the pass from Jessica Evans for the 1-0 lead.

The lead for Mercy was short-lived as Genna Bush (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) tied the game 2:47 into the third quarter. Sam Schaffer (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) took an initial shot and her strike was stopped by the Mercy goalie and went back into the field of play. Shaffer got the ball back and sent it to Bush for her first goal of the game.

Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) gave the Huskies the lead with her goal just over two minutes later thanks to an assist from Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area). The Mavericks had a penalty corner at the 37:17 mark but the Huskies' defense cleared away any scoring threat and kept the one-goal lead.

Mercy got a shot off two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter but the Bloomsburg defense blocked the shot and prevented the equalizer. Just 12 seconds later, Bush gave the Huskies an insurance goal at 47:18. Swineford put the final touches on the scoring two minutes later thanks to an assist from. Jasmine Fink (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.

The Mavericks had the final two shots of the game with less than 10 minutes to play as Ally Schreck put a pair of shots on cage but Jackie Nevel (Nescopeck, Pa./Berwick Area) turned both away for her third win in goal of the season.

Schaffer led all players with six shots while Bush finished the game with five, all on cage. Swineford and Madeline Newman (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) each had three shots for the Huskies.

Nevel played all 60 minutes for the Huskies and made four saves in the win while her Maverick counterparts Alexanda Giordano made 14 saves in 50:16 and Rebecca McClure finished the game in cage.

The Huskies play at home for the first time in 2023 when Bloomsburg welcomes Pace to Steph Pettit Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
