BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Huskies built a 13-3 lead going into halftime and didn't let up as Bloomsburg football defeated Shippensburg 20-10, Saturday afternoon. Junior
Owen Anderson (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) had a historic day for the Huskies as Bloomsburg improved to 4-4 on the year and 2-3 in conference play while the Raiders dropped to 2-6 and 1-4 in PSAC East action.
Anderson finished the day with five catches for 199 yards, the most receiving yards for a Husky since Rocco Forgione at Millersville in 2002. He had all of quarterback Andrew Herrmann's seven pass completions for 234 yards and four touchdowns of 11, 39, 45, and 70 yards.
Anderson finished the day with two of the three Bloomsburg touchdowns, including his career-long catch of 93 yards for a score. Of Anderson's 199 yards, he had 175 after the catch on his five catches. Anderson's 93-yard touchdown reception is the second longest in Bloomsburg history. In the 1985 state title game with IUP at Redman Stadium, Joe Dowd had a 94-yard reception for a touchdown from quarterback Jay DeDea.
Anderson had 199 yards on five catches, including two touchdowns.
Matthew Bowes (Somerton, Pa./La Salle College HS) had three catches for 31 yards and
Peyton Persing (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) had three grabs for 13 yards.
Zach Zerbe (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) ran for 27 yards on nine carries and
Jaden Helton (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) had 22 yards on three carries.
Junior
KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) finished day 16-for-22 for 278 yards and two touchdowns while taking two sacks and not throwing and interception.
For the Raiders, Vincent Micucci ran for 89 yards and the lone Raiders' TD while he threw for 82 yards on an 11-for-24-1 day. Tanner Hess ran for 58 yards on 13 carries and Josiah Leonard had 34 yards on 11 carries. Karim Bruch caught four passes for 31 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Huskies struck first as Anderson caught a 73-yard pass from Riley to put the Huskies up 7-0. Facing a 3
rd-and-3 from their own 21-yard line, Riley completed a pass to Anderson at the BLOOM-26, and he took it the rest of the way into the endzone for the 6-0 lead. Riley converted the extra point for the 7-0 lead with 14:14 to play in the quarter. The Raiders answered on their next drive but had to settle for a 54-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 11:58 to play before the break.
The two teams traded punts on the next two drives each before the Huskies put together a scoring drive with 2:34 to play in the quarter. The Huskies started at their own three-yard line and took a loss of a yard on the first rush. A Shippensburg encroachment penalty gave the Huskies a bit of breathing room up to the BLOOM-7. The Raiders' defense kept the next rushing attempt from gaining any yards to keep the Huskies at the BLOOM-7. Riley found Anderson on the far sideline and he took it all the way down the field for the 93-yard touchdown reception. Anderson caught the ball at about the 22-yard line and took it the rest of the way for the 13-3 lead for Bloomsburg. The 93-yard touchdown catch was the longest of Anderson's and Riley's career and the second-longest in program history.
The Huskies carried their 13-3 lead into halftime and through most of the third quarter. The Raiders made it a one-score game with 3:31 to go in the third as Vincent Micucci capped four-play, 43-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
The Raiders worked their way down to the BLOOM-34 to open the fourth quarter. The Raiders got down to the Huskies' 25-yard-line before Sam Stoner's pass was picked off by
Ervin Mitchell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) in the end zone.
The Huskies were forced to punt on their next drive and the Raiders' 38-yard field goal attempt was wide right to keep the score 13-10 in favor of Bloomsburg. The Huskies punted on their next drive and Riley's 55-yard kick pinned the Raiders' down at their own six-yard line. Shippensburg lost two yards on their next drive and went for it on 4
th-and-12 at their own four yard line. Sam Stoner's pass to Karim Brice fell short and Bloomsburg took over with just four yards to go to get into the end zone.
The Huskies needed just two plays for the score and used a four-yard run by
Riley Parker (Canton, Pa./Canton) to seal the game as Riley's extra point was good to give the Huskies a 20-10 lead with 1:17 to play.
Shippensburg got a first down on their next drive but never made it past midfield before the clock hit triple zeros for the Huskies' win.
Defensively,
Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led Bloomsburg with eight tackles while
Ryan Woertz (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had six, including 1.0 TLF for five yards.
Charles Crews III (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area),
Nate Capers (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford),
Hakeem Bacon (Chester, Pa./STEM Academy), and
Ky Seesholtz (Mifflinville, Pa./Central Columbia) all had five tackles and
Giovanni Cancro (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) had a sack for a loss of two yards.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, November 2 when they travel to PSAC East opponent Shepherd for a 12:00 p.m. showdown with the Rams.
