Football Secures 35-27 Win Over Millersville on Senior Day

The win gaurantees a winning season for the Huskies for the first time since 2018 and the Huskies finish third in the PSAC East standings.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team amassed 467 yards of offense as KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) combined for career days to lead the Huskies to a 35-27 win over Millersville on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 6-4 on the year while the Marauders fell to 0-10 on the year and 0-7 in PSAC East action.

Riley had a career-day with 321 passing yards on a 13-for-22 passing day with two touchdowns and one interception. Riley ran for additional 87 yards and three touchdowns as he accounted for all 35 points for the Huskies. Riley was 5-for-5 on extra-point kicks as well.

Griffen-Batchler was Riley's top target as he caught six passes for 209 yards for his first career 200+ receiving game. Griffen-Batchler is the first Husky receiver to surpass 200 yards receiving since Rocco Forgione at Millersville in 2002. He had all of quarterback Andrew Herrmann's seven pass completions for 234 yards and four touchdowns of 11, 39, 45, and 70 yards. Griffen-Batchler caught two touchdown passes and had a long reception of 68 yards. Griffen-Batchler had 83 yards after catch.

Matthew Bowes (Somerton, Pa./La Salle College HS) had a strong day for the Huskies with three catches for 62 yards and Ben Ries (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) caught his first two career passes for 19 yards. Peyton Persing (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) had one catch for 25 yards and Owen Anderson (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) caught a pass for six yards.

Riley's 87 yards led the rushing attack while Persing ran the ball five times for 35 yards and Riley Parker (Canton, Pa./Canton) carried the ball eight times for 20 yards.

Defensively, Ryan Woertz (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had a career-best 12 total tackles, including nine solo stops and 1.0 TFL for one yard. He had a 17-yard interception in the first quarter that led the Huskies first scoring drive of the game. Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had one of his best games of the season with 13 total tackles, six solo stops and seven assists, while collection a solo sack for six yards and 3.0 TFL (eight yards) and two quarterback hurries. Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had nine total tackles for the Huskies. Devin Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) and Nate Capers (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) each had eight tackles while Capers recorded 1.5 TFL (three yards). Tom Goetz (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) and Giovanni Cancro (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) each had a broken-up pass and Ky Seesholtz (Mifflinville, Pa./Central Columbia), Ian Donohue (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain), Emilio Diaz (Lancaster, Pa./Milton Hershey School), and Sean Paul (Roselle, N.J./Hudson Catholic) all got credit for a sack.

Millersville started with the ball after the Huskies won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Marauders were driving the ball on their opening possession and got the Bloomsburg 38-yard line after a seven-yard run by Jose Lopez got the Ville a first down. Ryan Zeltt dropped back to pass on first-and-10 and Woertz jumped the route of the Marauders' wide receiver to pull down his first interception of the season and returned it the BLOOM-31 to set the Huskies up with favorable field position.

The Huskies methodically moved the ball down the field, picking up four first downs to get to the VILLE-10 and set up first-and-goal. Riley connected with Persing for a 25-yard pass early in the drive for the only play of more than 10 yards in the 69-yard drive. Persing got the first carry on 1st-and-Goal to get down to the five yard line and Parker moved the ball down to the two-yard line for 3rd-and-Goal. Riley carried it the rest of the way with a quarterback sneak for the first score of the game and immediately kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

The Huskies' defense forced a 3-and-out on the drive Millersville drive to get the ball back with 3:40 to play in the opening quarter. Bloomsburg needed just one play to extend its lead to 14-0 and took just nine seconds off of the clock. On the first play from scrimmage at the BLOOM-39, Riley found Griffen-Batchler down the Huskies' sideline at the VILLE-23 and Griffen-Batchler went the final 23 yards untouched for the score and the 13-0 lead. Griffen-Batchler immediately went to hold the ball for Riley, who hit the extra point and gave Bloomsburg a 14-0 lead with 3:31 to play in the quarter.

The two teams traded punts to end the quarter as Millersville got the ball back with seven seconds to go in first and started the second with the ball on the VILLE-27.

Millersville dominated the second quarter and had the ball for 12:31 as the Marauders out-scored the Huskies 16-0 to take a 16-14 lead going into halftime. Millersville scored on its first drive of the second and set up a second scoring drive thanks to a Marauder interception in the endzone for a touchback. Trent McDowell hit a 45-yard field goal with seven seconds to play in the half for the only Marauder lead of the game.

If the second quarter belonged to Millersville, than the third was all Huskies. Bloomsburg received the opening kickoff and went 65 yards on 11 plays and used 5:30 of game time to re-take the lead, 21-16. Starting at their own 35 yard line, Riley hit Griffen-Batchler for a seven-yard completion before running for seven yards and a first down. Riley and Griffen-Batchler connected again for 16 yards and another Huskies' first down. The quarterback carried the ball for nine yards before finding Ries for his first career reception, a six-yard catch and first down for the Huskies at the VILLE-20. A run by Riley got the Huskies to the 12-yard line and a two-yard rush from Matt Buchman (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) picked up another first down at the 10-yard line. An incomplete pass in the back of the endzone and a five-yard sack pushed the Huskies back to the VILLE-15 on third down. Riley dropped back to pass but his offensive line created a wide-open gap for him to run through and get into the endzone for the 15-yard score. Riley's extra point was good and the Huskies took the lead back for good, 21-16, with 9:21 to play in the third.

The Marauders turned the ball over on downs on their next possession without getting a first down on their drive. The Huskies took over at the VILLE-43 and used nine plays, eight runs, to get into the endzone for the 28-16 lead. Riley ran the ball six times while Buchman had one carry and Persing had a carry for six yards. The only passing play came as Riley connected with Griffen-Batchler for eight yards to get to the VILLE-23. Riley scored on a Philadelphia Eagles-style tush push run from the one-yard line. The Riley extra point was perfect to complete the scoring drive.

Bloomsburg forced another 3-and-out by the Marauders to get the ball back with 50 seconds to play in the third quarter. The Huskies needed just two plays this time and 16 seconds to push their lead to 35-16. After the first pass fell incomplete to Griffen-Batchler, Riley went back to his top receiver again, this time for a 68-yard score after Griffen-Batchler caught the ball at the VILLE-45 over the middle and went the rest of the way. Riley's extra point was good as he went 5-for-5 on extra points for the day.

Millersville got its first and only first down of the quarter on its first play of the ensuing drive as the Marauders got into Husky territory with a 32-yard pass, their longest play of the game. Seesholtz and Diaz sacked the Marauders' quarterback on the next play to push Millersville back to the BLOOM-42. The drive ended in the fourth quarter with a 26-yard field goal for Millersville to cut the lead to 35-19.

The next five drives ended with a punt or turnover on downs for both teams until the Marauders put together a 13-play, 85-yard drive that only took 2:47 off the clock for the final score of the game, a 21-yard touchdown catch and successful two-point conversion to cut the lead to 35-27 with 10 seconds to play.

The Huskies recovered the onsides kick and Riley was able to kneel for the final play of the game and seal the win. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 6-4 on the year and secured a winning season for the Huskies. The win also positioned Bloomsburg to close out the year third in the PSAC East with just the final East/West crossover game to play, which does not factor in their conference record.

Bloomsburg travels to Slippery Rock for the final game of the season, a 1:00 p.m. kick off from Slippery Rock, Pa. on November 16.
