LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Georgian Court, 75-58, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday night.
Â
Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) posted his first double-double of the season, dropping 24 points and 10 rebounds. Bengel went 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the floor while notching two steals, a block and an assist.
Isiah Sherman (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln) recorded a career-high 13 points, going 4-for-6 (66.7 percent) on field goals and 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line.
Â
Jagger Dressler (Danville, Pa./Danville) and
Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) each tallied ten points, and each drained a pair of threes in the contest. Dressler posted four steals while Wild hauled in 11 rebounds.
Mondyu Richards (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) recorded six points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
Â
As a team, Bloomsburg (1-3) went 29-for-63 (46.0 percent) from the floor and 7-for-19 (36.8) from beyond the arc. The Huskies went for 15-for-29 (51.72 percent) in the second half. Bloomsburg held Georgian Court (0-3) to just 23-of-68 shooting (33.8 percent) in the contest.
Â
Dressler got the Huskies on the board first with a driving layup a minute into the contest. From there, neither team was able to gain distance, as the lead changed seven times in the opening eight minutes of the contest. A three from Wild and a layup from Richards put the Huskies ahead 20-17 halfway through the first frame.
Â
A four-minute scoreless stretch ended as the lions nailed a three to tie the game. After a few more lead changes, Bengel took the lead for the maroon and gold with a pair of free throws. From there, a one-handed slam from
Tony Henderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) helped carry Bloomsburg to a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Â
Georgian Court nearly tied the game early in the second half, but the Huskies regained the momentum after Richards launched a pass up court to Bengel for a fastbreak dunk. It was all Bloomsburg from that point forward, as the maroon and gold outscored the Lions 42-31 in the second half to claim a 75-58 victory.
Â
The Huskies return to the court on Tuesday, November 19 as they travel to Caldwell for a 6 PM contest.
