HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Bloomsburg softball wrapped up play at Abe's Invitational on Sunday with a pair of victories, a 9-8 walk-off win over Saginaw Valley State and a 2-0 win against PSAC foe Clarion.
The Huskies (5-1) stormed back after falling behind 7-0 through the top of the second inning in morning action against the Cardinals. Bloomsburg scored eight runs between innings two through four to force a tie at 8-8. After a leadoff double from
Emmie Rowe (Hetlerville, Pa./Central Columbia) and advancing to third off a sacrifice,
Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) put the ball in play as Rowe beat the throw home to complete the comeback effort.
In game two,
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) improved to 4-0 on the season after tossing her first complete game shutout of the season, allowing two hits and striking out 11 batters.Â
Game One:Â
Bloomsburg got off on the wrong foot in the first against SVSU, with six runs crossing the plate with only one out in the inning. Freshman
Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) received the call in a high-pressure situation, getting out of the jam without allowing any more runs and stranding runners on second and third.
After Saginaw Valley made it 7-0, the Huskies began to chip away at the deficit bit by bit.
Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) got Bloomsburg on the board in the bottom of the second with her first career home run and the first long ball of the season for the Huskies' bats. Yamrick held Saginaw Valley to a scoreless frame in the third to provide Bloomsburg further chances to eat into the Cardinals' lead.Â
Weidlich and
Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic) rattled off back-to-back singles as the Huskies faced two outs in the bottom of the inning. Yamrick forced an errant defensive play from third base, leading to Weidlich and Nemeth scoring to make it 7-3. SVSU would get one back in its portion of the fourth for an 8-3 game at the halfway point of the game.Â
The Huskies' fourth proved to be a monumental momentum swing for the team, with Bloomsburg scoring five to tie the game at 8-8. Rowe and
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) stood on second and third following a double from Culp. Weidlich grounded out to first, allowing both runners to move up. With runners on the corners and two outs, Yamrick and Straigis recorded consecutive RBI singles to keep the rally going and bring the game to 8-6. With the bases loaded,
Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) capitalized with a double to right field to bring the game back to square one.Â
Yamrick would retire the next four batters before allowing two hits and handing the ball off to Sowers. The junior escaped a bases-loaded jam with a pop fly to Kranzley at second to prevent any damage. Sowers shut the door in the seventh, giving the offense one last chance before extras in her first relief appearance of the season.
With two strikes, Rowe sent her first-career extra-base hit into right field and put the winning run in scoring position. Culp did her job, forcing the third baseman out of position with a sacrifice 60 feet away. Weidlich put the ball in play at the plate as Rowe beat the throw and tag for the dramatic win.Â
Yamrick put together her best pitching performance of the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out four. At the plate, four Huskies finished with multi-RBI games as the team combined for 14 hits in total.
Game Two:Â
Bloomsburg got off on the right foot in its second game of the day, tacking on a first-inning run. Culp led off the game with a double to left center and quickly found herself on third. After
Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic) sent a ball into right field, Culp could advance and make it a 1-0 game. The second inning started mirrored the first. Kranzley doubled to left to lead off the inning and quickly moved over off a sacrifice from
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy).
Mary Stork (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) drove in her first RBI of the season with a sac fly to put the Huskies up 2-0.
Two runs were all Sowers would need, remaining in control against the Golden Eagles from the first pitch. After allowing a one-out single in the first, the Irwin, Pa. native retired the next 11 batters, totaling six strikeouts. Clarion's only other hit was a lead-off single in the fifth before five of the final nine batters went down on strikes as Bloomsburg cruised to the victory.Â
Sowers now has 17 career outings with at least 10 strikeouts, with Sunday's starting outing resulting in her second of the season. The Huskies are now 2-0 all-time against Saginaw Valley, with this weekend's festivities as the first two meetings. Bloomsburg improves to 30-0 in program history against Clarion.
On the Horizon:Â
The Huskies will wait a week before traveling to Philadelphia for a doubleheader against Jefferson on Sunday, March 3, with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.Â
