Lacrosse Rolls In Season Opener; Defeats Holy Family 20-4 Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg lacrosse team got the 2024 season off to a hot start with a decisive 20-4 win over Holy Family, Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies started the year 1-0 while the Tigers dropped to 0-2 in the early season.

The Huskies wasted no time as Delaney Fox (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) scored the first goal of her Bloomsburg career and the first goal of the season just 21 seconds into action. The Tigers tied the game just a minute later but Julia Cote's (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) first of the game at 10:22 kicked off a nine-goal run for the Huskies. Cote scored twice more during the run while Maya Fulmer (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) added a pair of strikes as well. Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) each scored for the Huskies while they were down a player and Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) each found the back of the next. Griffin's goal came with 13:38 to play in the second quarter to give the Huskies a 10-1 lead.

Tori Wolstenholme cut the Husky lead to 10-2 with 12:23 to play in the second quarter. Austin scored her second of the game and her career as the Huskies were up a player on a free position shot. Bloomsburg pushed its lead to 13-2 with another goal from Coyle and Fox with 3:42 to play in the second.

Holy Family opened the third quarter scoring with a goal from Maura Kilkenny to make it 13-3 but that would be as close as the Tigers could get to the high-powered Husky offense.

Cote immediately answered Kilkenny's goal with her fourth of the game at the 11:03 mark after Stoll won the draw control to give the Huskies the ball. Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) pushed the Huskies' lead to 14-3 at the 5:28 mark and kicked off a seven-goal run that featured two more goals from Coyle and one from Sophia Zelakso, Emily Simpson (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic), and Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen). The Tigers capped the scoring with a goal from Taina Harkins with 2:24 to play and the Huskies left Philadelphia with a 20-4-win Wednesday.

12 different Huskies found their way on the score sheet as 11 players scored at least one goal and 12 had at least one assist. Cote led all players with seven points behind a four-goal, three-assist day while Coyle had four goals for Bloomsburg. Fox, Austin, and Fulmer each had two goals while Tori Bruno (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished the day with three assists.

As a team, the Huskies were 3-for-5 on free position shots and a strong 14-for-21 on clears. The Huskies won 11 draw controls led by three for Stoll and three for Coyle.

Defensively, Delaney Allen (/) led the Huskies with three caused turnovers while Amanda Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Cote, and Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each had two.  The Tigers turned the ball over 21 times 17 of them caused by the Huskies.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday as the Huskies welcome Gannon to Steph Pettit Stadium for the Huskies' first home game of the season on March 2. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
