Softball Takes One of Two Against Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Bloomsburg softball team took one of two games in a road doubleheader against Florida Southern Wednesday evening.

Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) started things off from the bump in game one, going a full seven innings and allowing five hits and a walk with a run while striking out two. Offensively, Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) and Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) each had timely pieces of hitting to lift the Huskies to a 3-1 victory in the first leg of the doubleheader.

Bloomsburg fell behind 3-0 after the first inning and made strides throughout the remainder of the second game to complete the comeback but came up just short in a 3-2 defeat.

Bloomsburg now sits at 8-4 overall on the season. The Mocs sit with a record of 12-16 on the year.

Game One:
The Huskies maintained a trend of quick starts in Wednesday evening's first leg, plating the game's first run in the top of the first. Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) reached base on a fielder's choice before coming around to score off a Yamrick double into the right-center gap to set things up nicely for Sowers and the Bloomsburg defense.

The first sign of trouble for Sowers came in the second after a lead-off triple from Florida Southern's Taylor Thomas. The Huskies got the first out via a ground out before a bloop single into right field tied the game at 1-1. The Mocs would get a runner on third base from an error, but Sowers would escape the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.

Bloomsburg reclaimed its lead in the third to hold onto the 3-1 advantage for good. Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) led off the inning with a walk, and Yamrick reached on an error to give the Huskies runners on first and second with one out. With two outs and both runners in scoring position after a wild pitch, Iseminger came through in the clutch with a single down the line in left field. Sowers pitched around a lead-off double, with three straight outs, including a punch out for the final out, to strand a runner on third and keep the lead intact.

The fourth inning saw both sides unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position as Bloomsburg left one on after an inning-opening walk, and the Mocs stranded another runner on third base.

Sowers and the Huskies' defense worked around another jam after the first two base runners for Florida Southern reached. Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) recorded the first out of the bottom portion of the fifth with a putout at third to get the lead runner before Sowers got the remaining two batters to sky a pair of balls to escape another situation.

In the end, the resilient situational pitching from Sowers and the supporting effort defensively allowed Bloomsburg to get out of game one with the win.

Game Two:
In game two, it was the Mocs that got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first to take early control of the contest.

Lillian Gray (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) stepped onto the bump in relief and allowed the Huskies the chance to climb out from the deficit, tossing five scoreless innings and giving up two hits while striking out three batters. She began her day with a pair of strikeouts after the first batter faced reached on an error.

Bloomsburg put its first dent into Florida Southern's lead with two outs in the top of the third. Culp and Weidlich notched back-to-back singles to put two runners on for Yamrick, with the freshman coming through with the third consecutive single for the Huskies' offense to make it a 3-1 ball game.

Both pitchers kept the game scoreless until the sixth when Bloomsburg again managed to chip away at its deficit. Once again facing two outs, Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) drew a walk, allowing Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) to smack a double to the wall in right-center to bring the game within one at 3-2.

In the end, the Huskies attempted to stoke their third two-out rally of the contest to force a tie, coming up just short with one final runner stranded on first in the top of the seventh.

The trio of Culp (3-for-7, 2 R, 1 BB), Weidlich (3-for-6, 1 R) and Yamrick (3-for-7, 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB) provided consistent support in the top third of the Bloomsburg lineup, combining to hit .450 on the day while scoring four of the five runs throughout the doubleheader.
