Softball Powers Past Mansfield for Doubleheader Sweep

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Bloomsburg softball team captured a midweek sweet over Mansfield Tuesday afternoon.

The Huskies began the day with a 13-3 victory over the Mountaineers in game one. The 13 runs set a new season-best, with three batters recording multiple RBI and three scoring multiple times.

In game two, Bloomsburg once again rode a balanced effort of pitching and hitting to secure the sweep with a 7-2 win. Pitchers Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) and Lyndsey Reinoehl (Shenandoah Heights, Pa./Marian Catholic) each tossed well from the mound, splitting the action and helping the Huskies to the win.

Bloomsburg improves to 15-8 overall with a 4-2 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Mansfield falls to 11-7 on the season with a 2-6 mark in conference play.

Game One:
Both sides had a quiet first inning to begin the day before the Huskies opened up in the second inning.

After the first three inning batters reached base, Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) sent a towering shot over the fence in left field for a grand slam and her second home run of the season to put Bloomsburg up 4-0.

On the bump, Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) was cruising for the majority of the day, sending down the Mountaineers' lineup with a career-high 16 strikeouts. With today's strikeout total, Sowers has the sixth-most punchouts in program history.

Bloomsburg looked to close the game in five innings with a five-run inning in the half. Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) and Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) each successfully reached before being bunted over to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) kicked off the scoring with a two-RBI single before Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) followed in her footsteps with one of her own to bring it to a 7-0 game. Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) capped off the Huskies' at-bats with a two-RBI double to make it 9-0.

Mansfield kept the game going with a three-run fifth of its own, with a two-run home run eliminating the run rule decision and a third run coming across after an error to bring the game to 9-3.

With the game moving forward, Bloomsburg kept the offense rolling with four runs in the final two innings. In the sixth, Emmie Rowe (Hetlerville, Pa./Central Columbia) delivered a RBI single with two outs to bring the score to 10-3. Taylor Welsh (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) cemented the game in the seventh with a three-run home run over the fence in right field to make it 13-3. Sowers wrapped up her day by striking out the side to wrap up her career-best outing.

Game Two:
The second game of the day got off to a slower start, with both pitchers getting through the first three innings with no runs allowed and just a single hit given up.

The Huskies dipped into the offensive well once again with a four-run effort in the fourth. Lenner led things off with a double before being moved over via a sacrifice bunt. The first run for Bloomsburg scored following a miscue by the Mountaineers' infield. Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic), Gianna Gombeda (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) and Culp followed that up with three consecutive base hits to bring the game to 4-0.

Eberly kept Mansfield off the board until the fourth where a flurry of singles helped the Mountaineers to cut the lead to 4-1. After Eberly had to leave the game, Reinoehl picked up where the Huskies' starter left off to minimize the damage.

Straigis tacked on another run in the top of the fifth with her team-leading fourth home run of her freshman campaign to make it a 5-1 ball game.

Reinoehl continued to pitch in a cool, calm and collected manner through the ensuing innings to keep the home side off the scoreboard.

Kranzley added two more with a single to center before got one back to conclude the day's action.

In game two, Eberly and Reinoehl combined to allow one run apiece while striking out a combined five batters. With her 3.1 innings pitched, Reinoehl picks up her first victory of the 2024 season.

On the Horizon:
The Huskies are back on the road in PSAC play with a pair of games at Kutztown, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29.
