Softball Bounces Back With a Pair of Wins Over Mansfield

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg softball team bounced back with a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield at Jan M. Hutchinson Field Tuesday afternoon.

A complete, combined effort in game one helped the Huskies to a 7-0 victory, with starting pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) recording her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. Offensively, the team combined for seven runs off nine hits.

Despite facing early adversity in game two, Bloomsburg responded with 10 unanswered runs from 13 hits to complete the sweep with a 10-2, run-rule victory in five innings.

With her third inning single in game two, Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) became the 13th player in Bloomsburg softball history to reach the 200-hit milestone.

The Huskies improve to 20-13 overall, with a 9-7 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Mountaineers fall to 11-17 on the year with a 2-16 mark in conference action.

Game One:
Bloomsburg bounced back after struggling offensively in the final series of last weekend with a pair of early runs in the bottom of the first.

Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) opened the day for the Huskies with a lead-off single and stole second to get into scoring position. Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) reached base safely after being hit by a pitch, setting up a two-on, one-out scenario with both baserunners in scoring position. Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) tapped in the first and Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) delivered a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-0 ball game.

In the second, Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) doubled to center field before coming around on a RBI single from Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) to grow the Huskies' advantage to three.

Mansfield had its best scoring opportunity of the early portion of the contest after getting two runners aboard with two outs. Sowers slammed the door on any thoughts of a rally, catching the tying run looking at a called third strike.

Weidlich drove in her second run of the game to extend Bloomsburg's edge to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth after Culp led off the inning with a triple to the fence in the right-center gap.

The Huskies added on further insurance in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to put the game out of reach. With two runners on and one out, Culp launched her second triple of the afternoon to the outfield to make it a 6-0 ball game. Pinch-hitting, Mary Stork (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) came off the bench and singled up the middle to plate the final run of game one.

Sowers capped off her day in style, getting each of the final three batters of the contest to strike out swinging.

Game Two:
The Mountaineers responded to their scoreless defeat with a quick start in game two of the afternoon. After the first two batters reached, a pair of wild pitches set up advantageous scoring opportunities for Mansfield to score two in the top of the first.

Bloomsburg cut the early deficit to one after Kranzley delivered a RBI single down the left-field line but stranded two runners aboard trailing 2-1.

The Huskies tied the game at 2-2 after Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) reached base on an errant third strike to set up a two-out rally and Culp's third triple of the afternoon.

After facing the early-inning challenges, starting pitcher Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) settled into the contest and pitched out of some precarious scenarios. In the third, escaped the inning after the first two runners reached and made it into scoring position by getting the next two batters to chase.

The momentum from the stop carried over into the hitting portion of the third for Bloomsburg with Yamrick sending a RBI single up the middle and Iseminger notching a sacrifice fly to give the Huskies the lead at 4-2.

Bloomsburg ended the afternoon with a six-run fifth inning to walk off the contest via a run-rule decision. After the first three base runners singled, an errant throw by the Mansfield hurler allowed Kranzley to score to make it 5-2. Iseminger doubled on the first pitch of her at-bat past the diving third baseman to plate two and bring the advantage to five. Gianna Gombeda (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) notched a double of her own into the gap to raise the edge to six. Pinch-hitting for the second time, Stork smacked a ball and forced a misguided effort from the Mountaineers shortstop to bring the end within one. With two outs, Kranzley wrapped things up with a RBI single past third base to finish the game in five.

On the Horizon:
The Huskies are back at Jan M. Hutchinson Field for a PSAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. against #15 East Stroudsburg.
