Collins Collects Career-Win No. 400 in Historic Doubleheader Sweep Over Mansfield

Baseball earned the 1,200th win in program history in game one

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg baseball head coach Mike Collins picked up his 400th career win as the Huskies swept Mansfield, 7-0 and 16-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field on Thursday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (15-31, 10-20 PSAC East) tallied 23 runs and 27 hits across the twin bill while holding Mansfield (14-30, 7-23) to just a pair of runs as the Huskies notched its 1,200th victory in program history.

Game One – Bloomsburg 7, Mansfield 0

Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) recorded the first hit of the game, lining a single to left-centerfield. Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) drew a four-pitch walk before a sacrifice-bunt from Christian LaBarbera (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) moved both runners into scoring position. Judah Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) brought LaBarbera home on a sacrifice-fly to leftfield.

The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs in the third before extending the lead on a wild pitch.

After a double and a stolen base for Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) in the fourth inning, Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) drove a single through the middle to bring home the centerfielder. A left-centerfield single from Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored Levis before Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) sent a three-run home run to straightaway centerfield to put the Huskies ahead 7-0.

It was smooth sailing to the end of the game for the maroon and gold as Bloomsburg earned its 1,200th win in program history.

Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went the distance for the complete game shutout while not giving up a walk. The graduate pitcher picked up his second career shutout and seventh career complete game.

Game Two – Bloomsburg 16, Mansfield 2

The Mountaineers took the lead early in the nightcap, scoring an unearned run on a sacrifice-fly in the top of the first inning.

Bloomsburg responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-out double down the leftfield line from Miller.

A sacrifice-fly from Jacob Reifer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia Area) in the second allowed Christian LaBarbera (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) to serve as the go-ahead run for the Huskies. A pair of RBI-singles through the left side gave the maroon and gold a 4-1 lead. Miller notched the Huskies' third-straight single by beating out a throw by the Mounties third baseman, loading the bases for Gibble. Gibble took the second pitch over the rightfield wall for his second career grand slam, putting Bloomsburg ahead 8-1.

Mansfield brought in its second run on an RBI-double in the top of the third.

Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) laid down a perfect bunt to bring Gibble across the plate in the fourth. Ryan Flury (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) then batted in the Huskies' tenth run on a single to left field. A two-RBI single from Riley brought Ebbert and Flury in to give Bloomsburg a 10-run lead.

Metzger then notched his 13th home run of the season, blasting a stone-cold shot over the rightfield fence to put the maroon and gold up 14-2. His 26th career home run moves him into a tie for fifth all-time on the Huskies' career home run leaderboard with Trevor Fetterman (1996-99).  He also claimed fifth on the single season home run leaderboard.

Christian LaBarbera (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) got the fans at Dan on their feet again in the fifth as he launched a two-run homer to deep centerfield.

Bloomsburg easily held on for the win, giving Collins his 400th career victory. He is the first head coach in Bloomsburg history and the 10th in PSAC history to reach 400 wins.

Mason Keene (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) tossed 114 pitches in his first career complete game, allowing just one earned run.

Metzger went 5-for-9 on the day with five runs and 3 RBIs. Gibble went 4-for-6 at the dish with three runs and four RBIs.

The LaBarbera's went a combined 7-for-11 on the day while each posted a 3-for-3 game. Jonathan went perfect at the plate in game one and totaled three runs and four RBIs on the day. Christian went perfect in the nightcap and notched three runs and two RBIs in the twin bill.
