Football Drops Heartbreaker to Seton Hill, 15-14, Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team dropped a heart-breaker to Seton Hill as the Griffins scored with nine seconds left in the fourth to take the 15-14 win. The Huskies dropped to 1-1 on the year while the Griffins improved to 1-2 for the season.

Facing a 4th-and-2 on the Huskies 14 yard line and nine seconds to play in regulation, Jake Cruz found Todd Phillips racing to the back corner on the end zone on the Huskies sideline and got the game-winning pass in just out of reach of the Huskies' defender. The Griffins went for two to make it a three-point game, but the Cruz rushing attempt failed and the Huskies were down one with nine seconds to play.

An incomplete pass just two seconds left in regulation and after a completion to Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) that he passed back to Sean Mackinder (Archbald, Pa./Valley View), the Griffins got their final stop for the come-back win.

The Griffins scored first with a late first quarter 25-yard field goal.

The Huskies punted on their first drive of the second quarter and forced a punt by Seton Hill on its next drive. Bloomsburg started its second drive of the quarter at the Huskies 20-yard line. Ben Ries (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) found Matthew Bowes (Somerton, Pa./La Salle College HS) for 23 yards down the far sideline for a Bloomsburg first down. After a false start penalty backed Bloomsburg up five yards, Riley Parker (Canton, Pa./Canton) carried the ball twice and got the Huskies up to the Bloomsburg 42-yard line. Ries then found Griffen-Batchler just on the other side of midfield for a catch at the SHU-40, which he took another 29 yards for a 44-yard completion down to the SHU-11.

Jaden Helton (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) carried the ball down to the Seton Hill five-yard line and Parker punched it for the score and after the Ben Paserk (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) kick was good, the Huskies led 7-3.

The rest of the second quarter featured two punts, and a Seton Hill interception as the Huskies went into the locker room up 7-3.

The third quarter went much like the second with two punts, two missed field goals, one for each team, and an interception but the Huskies took a 14-3 lead with 1:46 to play in the third.

Starting at their own 34 yard line, the Huskies handed the ball off once to Parker to get down to the 27. The next handoff went to freshman Jake Williams (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) who shook off tackles through the box and raced down field for his first collegiate touchdown. A 73-yard score, which was the longest touchdown run for the Huskies since Lawrence Elliot went 75 yards to the house against Stonehill on September 2, 2016.

Paserk converted the extra point and the Huskies pushed their lead to 14-3 with 58 seconds to play in the third.

Seton Hill came out in the fourth and on its first drive went 12 plays for 62 yards and a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-9 as the two-point conversion attempt failed.
After forcing two more punts from the Huskies, the Griffins set up their game-winning drive with 3:48 to play in regulation.

Williams had a career day for the Huskies as he put up 141 yards on the ground on just 14 carries. Williams averaged 10.1 yards per carry and brought his season total to 193 yards.

Ries was 9-for-15 on the day with 151 yards and two interceptions while Griffen-Batchler caught two passes for 59 yards and Gabe Brower (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) caught four passes for 50 yards. Brower had four carries for 54 rushing yards.

The Huskies ran for 196 yards as a team on 37 carries.

Senior Tom Goetz (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) was all over the field for the Huskies on defense as he racked up eight total tackles including 1.5 sacks for 11 yards, a pass break up and a QB hurry. Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had 10 total tackles and a QB hurry while Ian Donohue (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) got to the QB twice and had four tackles, including 1.0 TFL for four yards and 0.5 sacks for 3 yards.

The Griffins ran for 125 yards as a team but took 49 yards of loss for a net of 76 while Cruz went 17-for-30 with 201 yards and one TD.

The Huskies look to rebound as they travel to Edinboro next week for the 12:00 p.m. PSAC East/West crossover contest. The Huskies will be home in two weeks on September 28 as they honor Danny Hale's impending induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
