BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg men's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon over Findlay.
The Huskies moved to 3-1 on the season, earning their third consecutive win. The Oilers suffered their first defeat of the season, moving to 2-1 on the year.
Teagan Wallace (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) came through in crunch time again for Bloomsburg, converting a penalty inside the final 10 minutes of the match to put the Huskies up for good.Â
How It Happened:
Saturday's contest was a clash of styles, with the Bloomsburg press squaring off against alternating direct and indirect passing from Findlay.Â
The Huskies looked to take advantage of its set-piece chances in the opening minutes with several opportunities.
Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had the first opportunity for Bloomsburg off a free kick stopped by Oilers' goalkeeper Keegan Grant. From a corner,
Micah Diggs (Groton, Conn./Fitch) sent another header in on net secured by Grant. Minutes later, Walsh had the Huskies' best chance of the opening half with a header ricochet off the crossbar from a second corner.
Making his first collegiate start, freshman
Peter Punchello (Jamison, Pa./William Penn Charter) played a reliable game protecting the goal. The Jamestown, Pa. native made his lone save of the afternoon in the 14th minute, stopping the attempt of the Oilers' Brendan Ash.Â
Bloomsburg generated its next set of chances past the 20-minute park with shots from Wallace and
Parker Nickelsen (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) putting pressure on Findlay's defense. Findlay generated its best chances in the first half in the final 10 minutes. The Oilers had multiple shots from different locations, but the chances could not cause a dent.Â
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) started things in the second half for the Huskies after finding a lane in front of Findlay's net. Moving to his right, the senior got a foot on the ball but not with enough power to challenge Grant.
Owen Peri (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) found himself along the top of the 18-yard box with a defender on his back but enough space to put an attempt toward the top left.Â
Sam Blumberger (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) and
Jaliyl Melvin (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) were the next to make a push for the first goal, with Melvin threading a ball to the opposite wing to Blumberger's feet. The junior forward took on a defender and found enough time to square up a shot that beat the keeper but escaped just outside the post.Â
As time ticked off the clock, the chances for both sides became ever more pertinent, and the Huskies had a direct opportunity in front of goal in the 84th minute. In the sequence of a corner kick, a Bloomsburg player went down inside the box, to the dismay of the Oilers. Wallace, in turn, stepped up to the penalty spot with a chance at the lead in front of him. The senior midfielder maintained his composure and sent Grant the opposite way, slotting the ball in the bottom right corner for the lead.Â
The final moments saw Findlay launching the ball forward down the wings in last-ditch efforts to find an equalizer. The Huskies' ever-reliant backline fended off any final attempts to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.Â
Numbers of Note:
7-1 - The Huskies' attacking efforts generated quality shot attempts throughout Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg had a shot-on-goal advantage of 7-1, with several off-target chances narrowly missing the back of the net.
On the Horizon:Â
