MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg women's soccer team cruised to its second victory of the week with a 3-1 decision at Millersville Saturday afternoon.
Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) was the leader offensively once again, recording her second brace in as many matches.
Alena Totten (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) found her way into the scoresheet with her first goal of the season to help pace the Huskies. Foster and the offense got assistance from
Anika Krasnai (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Jess Waznor on the goal-scoring efforts.Â
Bloomsburg improves to 4-2 overall with a 2-2 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division. The Marauders fall to 2-2-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference action.
How It Happened:
The Huskies started fast and furious, recording three shots as a team in the opening 12 minutes of the contest. The aggressive team approach paid off in the 29th minute with the team's first goal. Foster initiated the play by switching the ball at midfield to Krasnai on the left wing. Krasnai drove the left side, taking her defender on a one-on-one before whipping in a cross to an unmarked Foster at the six-yard spot for the early advantage.Â
Millersville answered with a goal less than three minutes later to knot the match at 1-1. The lone mistake of the afternoon for Bloomsburg saw the Marauder's Isabel Coy catch the Huskies' defense out of position and into position to sneak a low shot across goal for the equalizer.Â
The game would not enter halftime tied up, as Totten added to Bloomsburg's scoring efforts to put the Huskies up 2-1 after 45 minutes of action. With just over two minutes left to play, goalkeeper
Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) punted the ball past the half line, where Bloomsburg headed it down. Totten won the race to the loose ball, passed by a defender and beat the keeper for the lead.
Despite the one goal for Millersville, the Huskies controlled the pace in the first half, finishing with an 8-3 shot advantage.
Bloomsburg wasted no time extending its lead to put an exclamation on the match. One minute into the half, Millersville goalkeeper Sabrina Zimmerman looked to push the ball down the field with a free kick. Her kick fell short and was headed toward the box, awaiting a patient Waznor, shielding off a defender to maintain possession. She nudged the ball with a light tap to Foster, who caught Zimmerman off her line with a high-arcing shot that went into the top right corner for a 3-1 advantage.Â
From then on, the Huskies switched to a more possession-based style of play, leaning on a well-rounded team defensive effort to spoil the Marauders' home-field advantage and cap off a dynamic week on the pitch.
Numbers of Note:
4 - With four goals in her last two games, Foster matches her single-season high set during her freshman campaign.
1- A strong defense is a focal point for the Huskies, and it was evident on Saturday, with the Marauders recording only one shot on target in the contest.
On The Horizon:
The Bloomsburg women's soccer returns to Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. for a PSAC matchup with No. 8 Kutztown.
