LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg women's soccer team battled wet and blustery conditions to earn a 2-1 road victory in its regular-season finale against Lock Haven.
The Huskies (10-5-2, 7-5-2 PSAC East) rallied after surrendering an early second-half goal to the Bald Eagles (5-10-2, 2-10-2) to come out on top. Bloomsburg took advantage of its set pieces, with
Daryn Savage (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Anna Dalesandro (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) connecting twice from corner routines to secure the victory.
How It Happened:
Bloomsburg seemed to be just one touch or pass away in the first half, with much of its play looking to play direct over the top or whip in a cross down the wing. In the back-and-forth exchange of possession, the Huskies found themselves in key areas in the final third, unable to connect and find the opening goal through the first 45 minutes.Â
In total, the two teams combined for just three shots. Dalesandro had the lone attempt in the half for Bloomsburg, while Lock Haven's Maci Shaffer and Leana Cuzzocrea recorded the shots for the home side. The Huskies set the early stages for their success at the corner flag, holding a 5-1 advantage in the first half.
After a delay to the start of the second half, Bloomsburg got off on the wrong foot. Two minutes after the whistle to resume play, the Bald Eagles managed to draw a corner. The ensuing kick grabbed the attention of several members of the Huskies' defense, with several bodies being out of position. The quick, successive touches eventually led to a finish for Bryn Constanzer to give Lock Haven the 1-0 edge.Â
After a routine save from goalkeeper
Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley), Bloomsburg eventually upped its intensity to pull itself back into the match. With the team's second corner kick of the half, the Huskies pounced on the opportunity to tie the match at 1-1. Dalesandro stepped over the ball at the near-side corner flag. The midfielder's pass was a beautiful outswinging ball toward the back post, with Savage elevating above the crowd to head home the equalizer.
Bloomsburg wasted little time from that moment on, taking its first and final lead of the night just over a minute later. A mishandled ball by the Lock Haven goalkeeper on a free kick gave the Huskies another corner kick, this time coming from the far flag. Dalesandro's inswinging delivery curled perfectly to the back post, finding a host of bodies. Savage once more got the final touch on the ball, guiding the ball to the bottom right corner for the lead.
The Huskies' efforts on the attacking end flipped the team morale and composure on the defensive side. Bloomsburg put together a stalwart final half hour to maintain the result. The added pressure on the counter for the Huskies nearly added an insurance goal in the final moments. In the end, Bloomsburg came away with a potentially momentum-building result to snap a three-game skid and begin preparations for postseason action.
Numbers of Note:
10 - The Huskies' presence in the final third was evident at key points during the match. Bloomsburg finished with as many corner kicks (10) in the match as shots, outpacing Lock Haven in both categories, 10-4 and 10-5, respectively.
9 - Bloomsburg's focus now shifts to the PSAC Tournament. Saturday's contest will mark the ninth consecutive appearance in the conference tournament for the Huskies under head coach
Matt Haney.
