Huskies Take #4 Kutztown Down to the Wire; KU Holds on for 35-27 Win

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team delivered one of its most complete offensive efforts of the season against fourth-ranked Kutztown, pushing the undefeated Golden Bears for four quarters before falling 35–27 in a spirited PSAC East battle at Redman Stadium.

Behind a career-day from quarterback KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), the Huskies rolled up 410 total yards of offense — the most allowed by Kutztown this season — and matched the Golden Bears blow-for-blow through the air in a game full of fireworks. Riley finished with 334 passing yards and three touchdowns - all opponent highs against the nationally ranked Golden Bears defense.

Gabe Brower (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) was dynamic from the slot, catching 10 passes for 151 yards, including a 45-yard strike that ignited Bloomsburg's second-quarter touchdown drive. Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) continued his big-play consistency with seven catches for 107 yards and a 47-yard touchdown, while Jack Landis (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Alex Achenbach (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) each hauled in scoring receptions in the first half.

Bloomsburg trailed 7-0 after the first quarter before Riley orchestrated a 12-play, 80-yard march capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass to Achenbach to open the second. After Kutztown answered, the Huskies punched back when Riley hit Landis on a 17-yard strike to pull within 14-13.

Kutztown added a late touchdown before halftime to make it 21–13, but the Huskies were already knocking on the door of racking up the most passing yards and points allowed by Kutztown all season.

Bloomsburg wasted no time reigniting the offense in the third. After Kutztown extended its lead to 28-13, Riley orchestrated another lightning-quick answer. Starting at their own 27, the Huskies used tempo to catch the defense off balance. A short completion to Paul Wojciechowski (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) set up third-and-medium near midfield, and on the next play, Riley stepped up in the pocket and uncorked a 47-yard touchdown bomb to Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy), who split two defenders down the middle and hauled in the pass in stride for the score. The four-play, 73-yard drive took just 96 seconds and again pulled Bloomsburg within one possession.

Kutztown struck once later in the third, but the Huskies kept fighting. In the fourth quarter, a forced fumble by Ian Donohue (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) gave Bloomsburg new life, and the offense capitalized. Taking over in Golden Bear territory, Riley hit Brower for 14 yards and connected with Griffen-Batchler again to move the sticks. Declan Clancy (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) capped the seven-play, 46-yard march by bursting through the middle for a 10-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 35-27 with just over nine minutes remaining.

After Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) got behind the line and sacked the Kutztown quarterback on 3rd-and-3, the Golden Bears were forced to punt and give the ball back to the Huskies with 6:07 to play.
Bloomsburg orchestrated an 18-play, 47-yard drive and got as close as the Kutztown five-yard line but a pair of penalties stalled the drive with 10 seconds to play in regulation and Kutztown nabbed a last-ditch effort interception to hold off the upset-minded Huskies.

The Husky defense forced a critical fourth-quarter turnover when Cole Turner (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) recovered a Kutztown fumble, setting up Clancy's touchdown. Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) notched the team's lone sack, while Tyler Frey (York, Pa./Central York) and Idriz Ahmetovic (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) led the effort with seven and six total tackles, respectively.

On special teams, Eli Zimmerman (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) contributed 134 all-purpose yards, including 113 on kickoff returns, giving the Huskies key field position throughout the afternoon.

The Huskies return home for the final time in 2025 as they host Slippery Rock in the season-finale for both teams. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. from Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. Prior to kickoff, the Huskies will honor the graduating seniors from the cheerleading, band, and football teams.
