LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg softball team opened a new month of action with a doubleheader sweep on the road against Lock Haven Tuesday afternoon.
The Huskies (16-9, 10-8 PSAC) put on a strong display in the box and on the mound, outpacing the Bald Eagles (9-15, 3-11) 16-3 across the two games. Bloomsburg took game one, 7-2, before securing the sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two.Â
The trio of arms for the Huskies, including Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot), Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) and Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled), kept Lock Haven in check for the afternoon, allowing just nine hits and two earned runs to 21 total strikeouts from the Bald Eagles. Offensively, Bloomsburg had four run-producing extra-base hits in game one while being led by the efforts of Reagan Wiest (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) in game two.
How It Happened:
Game One:
The Huskies managed to uphold a trend of finding the scoreboard early with a run in each of the first three innings. In the first inning, a leadoff double from Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) eventually led to a bases-loaded situation for Bloomsburg. With two outs, Allie Wenrich (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) put a dribbler into play that caught Lock Haven's pitcher off guard, forcing a miscue and leading to an early 1-0 lead.Â
The second inning saw the Huskies continue to take advantage of the Bald Eagles' infield, with Malauni Frost (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) reaching on an error and Jayla Bartholomew's (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport) attempted sacrifice bunt turning into an infield single. A misjudged ball in center field resulted in an out at second and an RBI for Culp, with Frost successfully touching home plate. Bloomsburg needed one swing to score one in the third. Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) crushed a mammoth blast over the scoreboard in left-center to move the Huskies' advantage to 3-0.
Yamrick had some of her best stuff of the season working on Tuesday, with the sophomore recording a career-high 11 strikeouts for her sixth victory of the season. The right-handed pitcher got through the first 2.2 innings clean before a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. Yamrick did not let the previous at-bat phase her, sending down the next Lock Haven batter on strikes.Â
Bloomsburg and Yamrick continued to roll further into the game, plating an additional four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the first contest out of reach. The Huskies' starter reached base with one out before eventually making her way to third base. The pitcher scored with two outs in the inning after Frost ripped a double into the gap in left-center to recoup a three-run edge. Three extra-base hits produced three runs in the top of the sixth, starting with a leadoff triple by Culp. The senior infielder came around following a one-out double from Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic) to make it a 5-1 game. Wenrich drove in the final two runs for Bloomsburg with a well-driven triple to center field to make the Huskies' advantage six runs.Â
The Bald Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little and too late for the home side. Yamrick remained in her comfort zone through the closing innings of her outing, getting seven of the final 10 outs in her appearance via strikeout.
Game Two:
The Huskies got off to a slower start in game two before finding their groove in the final four innings to run away with a game two victory.Â
Lock Haven capitalized during the second inning on a pair of infield miscues to grab their first lead of the afternoon at 1-0. Sowers' temperament on the mound kept the Bald Eagles in check and her team in rhythm. The fourth-year pitcher battled her way out of several situations with runners in scoring position to provide her team the opportunity to rally.
Rally Bloomsburg did, starting with two runs in the top of the fourth. Wenrich opened the top of the fourth with a leadoff walk before being moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from Wiest. Straigis delivered a single through the middle of the infield that skipped past the glove of Lock Haven's center fielder, allowing the sophomore to round each base to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.Â
Bloomsburg built upon its momentum in the fourth and carried it into a four-run fifth inning. Three of the first four batters in the inning registered singles to load the bases. Wiest stepped into the box and delivered with a hard-struck ball that skipped right over the first base bag and down the line in right field. The ball curtailed away from the Bald Eagles' right fielder, allowing the game-two catcher to tally her first career triple. Straigis cleaned up in the next at-bat with an RBI single into left field to make it a 6-1 contest. The runs would stop for the time being despite back-to-back walks on eight pitches loading the bases for the Huskies.Â
Eberly put on a powerful showing through the final three innings for Bloomsburg, sealing the midweek sweep. The senior's appearance did not start as intended, with the leadoff batter sending a triple to the warning track. The left-hander stuck to her stuff early and did not shy away from the pressure, getting the next two batters for Lock Haven down swinging. After a walk put runners on the corners with two outs, Eberly got the backward K to end the fifth and prevent any damage.Â
The senior continued working down the Bald Eagles' lineup, overcoming the challenges and obstacles to shut the game down. Before the day's end, the Huskies tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh, with four hits from the first five batters. Macey Fisher (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin), Culp and Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) each recorded an RBI inning. Eberly's day ended dominantly, striking out the side and decisively ending the afternoon.
Numbers of Note:Â
