Softball Celebrates Senior Day With Postseason-Clinching Doubleheader Split Against West Chester

The Bloomsburg softball team honored its seven senior members: Jayla Bartholomew, Bella Culp, Kelly Eberly, Gianna Gombeda, Emma Little, Mia Nemeth, and Callie Sowers.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg softball team ended the regular season with a split against West Chester at Jan Hutchinson Field on Sunday. With the win, the Huskies secured the No. 4 East seed in the PSAC Championship, beginning on Wednesday, April 30.

The Huskies (29-17, 19-13 PSAC) began the day with a narrow defeat in a low-scoring, 2-1 contest to open the day against the Golden Rams (32-17, 18-14). Bloomsburg responded by fending off a late surge from West Chester in game two to hold onto a 5-4 decision.

The Bloomsburg softball team celebrated senior day as part of its regular-season finale festivities. The seven honored seniors were Jayla Bartholomew (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport), Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin), Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled), Gianna Gombeda (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton), Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford), Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic), and Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area).

How It Happened:
The game started slowly for both sides, with the means for producing offense not coming to fruition for either side. The Golden Rams got the board the game's first runner aboard with a one-out walk but did not see anyone else aboard until the top of the fourth.

The Huskies threatened for the game's first run by putting runners in scoring position in the second and third innings. Bloomsburg looked to rally with two outs in the bottom of the second. Allie Wenrich (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) worked a walk from a full count before the team put two aboard after a single from Reagan Wiest (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy). A well-struck ball from Malauni Frost (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) on the next pitch tracked right into the glove of West Chester's left fielder to end the inning. In the third, Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) led off the inning with a single and moved over via a sacrifice bunt from Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin). The Huskies again came up empty-handed, with the Golden Rams escaping the circumstances.

West Chester built upon its successes in the bottom halves of the previous inning to score first in the top of the fourth. A leadoff walk set up the inning before Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) recorded the next two outs. Walks continued to cause problems, as a two-out free base allowed the next batter for the Golden Rams to hit a towering shot to left field that, with normal conditions, would have left the park. Instead, the ball hung in the sky, working its way back into the field of play for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead. Yamrick eventually worked her way out of the inning while staring at the bases loaded, getting the final out swinging at strike three.

Bloomsburg responded by getting its three batters of the fourth aboard to tie the game at 1-1. Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) opened the frame for the Huskies with a leadoff single. Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) dropped a bunt to West Chester's pitcher in the next at-bat. The impending throw over to the covering second baseman was misjudged, allowing Kranzley to move to third and Little to reach safely at first. Wenrich took the next pitch of the inning to left field for an RBI single and evened up the score. A one-out single from Frost would load the bases for Bloomsburg before the team would be stumped in the face of a pitching change to allow the visitors to minimize the damage for a third time.

Another opportunity with runners in scoring position slipped by the Huskies, as neither side found a run in the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, the Golden Rams found the decisive run to take game one. West Chester's leadoff batter fended off an 0-2 count to begin the inning and turn the hole into a single. After producing a sacrifice bunt, the Golden Rams plated their second run with a gap-splitting double. Staring down the top of the West Chester lineup, Bloomsburg got an outstanding defensive effort from Culp, with the senior shortstop laying out for a skied and tailing infield pop-up, making the catch and turning over for the flip at second to turn two. Even with the boost from the last play, the Huskies could not mount the necessary comeback to take the day's opening contest.

Game Two;
The second clash brought more offensive sparks with heightened drama and intensity. The winner of game two would earn a place in the PSAC Tournament.

With postseason implications more prevalent than ever, Bloomsburg put its best foot forward to score first. Kranzley and Wenrich carried over their hitting performances into game two with back-to-back singles to begin the second. Little dropped another sacrifice bunt to give the Huskies two in scoring position, bringing up Wiest. The sophomore delivered with a hard-hit grounder to third base that bounced off the outstretched glove of the diving defender to plate one. Unfortunate bounces continued for Frost and Bloomsburg as another well-struck ball from the freshman skipped into the glove of the Golden Rams' second baseman, allowing the visitors to turn a 4-6-3 double play to keep it at a 1-0 game.

Two hits were all West Chester needed to tie the game in the top of the third. After a four-pitch strikeout from Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area), the Golden Rams took advantage of the win with a single that teetered on the chalk of the line in right field. The bottom of the order for the Golden Rams delivered again, this time with a ripped double through the wind to find a path to the fence and tie the game at 1-1. Sowers maintained her composure against the top of the lineup for the second time, getting quick outs on a one-pitch fly ball and a four-pitch strikeout to keep the game moving forward.

The Huskies followed the lead of their pitcher and settled back in to jump back out in front with a four-run bottom of the third. With two outs and a runner on second, Carly Wywoda (Dupont, Pa./Holy Cross) came off the bench to pinch-hit for Bloomsburg. The junior outfielder delivered in the pressure spot, poking a single through the right side of the infield to put the Huskies on top, 2-1. Kranzley and Wenrich followed in the footsteps of Wywoda, repeating their earlier history with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Stepping into the moment, Little put the ball in play with a whipping fly ball into shallow field out of reach of West Chester's second baseman and right fielder, with the two colliding on the play and allowing Little to race into third with a bases-clearing triple for a 5-1 advantage.

Sowers continued to do well heading into the latter stages of game two, recording six consecutive outs in the fifth and sixth innings. Bloomsburg had the opportunity to tack on to their lead with two on base and one out in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Rams relied on their defensive acumen again, this time turning a 6-4-3 double play to prevent the Huskies from adding further run support.

The mounting favorability continued into the top of the sixth as West Chester sought to erase the deficit. The inning opened with a cluster at the pitcher's circle, as miscommunication allowed a ball to drop in the dead center of the infield. Two consecutive singles followed to load the bases for the Golden Rams, as the visitors scored their second run of the game in the following plate appearance with a walk. West Chester reduced the gap to one from consecutive sacrifice flies from the heart of the order. Sowers would get the final out on the Golden Rams' own attempt to find some magic with a pinch hitter, getting the fresh face down swinging on strikes.

A scoreless bottom of the sixth put the onus one last time on the shoulders of Sowers. West Chester played for the tie to begin the seventh, getting the leadoff batter aboard with a two-strike single before putting the runner in scoring position with a sacrifice. With the top of the lineup getting the last crack at the tie, Sowers and the defense focused on the final two outs. The senior recorded the second out by getting a critical called third strike on the outside part of the plate. The Golden Rams would find a two-out base hit: a sharply hit drive into left field that did not plate a run with a strong throw into home. Falling behind 3-1 in the next at-bat, Sowers inched her way to the closing act, a weak dribbler off the end of the bat for a 4-3 putout and to give Bloomsburg a shot at a PSAC Championship.

Numbers of Note:
1 - The margins between the Huskies and Golden Rams were as thin as imaginable in 2025. All four games between the two teams came down to one-run decisions, with identical final scores (2-1, 5-4) being the final results in both doubleheaders.

72 - Battling through adversity, Sowers picked up another milestone victory. The senior recorded win No. 72 to move into a tie with the fifth-most victories in program history.

131 - Another milestone on senior day occurred with Little's three-RBI triple in game two. The fourth-year catcher became the ninth player in team history to notch at least 130 career runs batted in with Sunday's performance.

On the Horizon:
The Bloomsburg softball team turns its attention to Quakertown for the PSAC Tournament. The Huskies' first game as the East No. 4 seed will see them take on West No. 5 seed California (Pa.) at 10:00 a.m. A full preview of the conference tournament will be available in the coming days.
