WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Bloomsburg wrestlers logged a full day of competition Saturday at the Bloomsburg Open, working through deep brackets and recording multiple bonus-point victories at Liberty Arena. The Huskies finished fifth with 66.5 team points.
The Huskies hosted the first Bloomsburg Open and welcomed over 100 wrestlers from across the region, including 16 Bloomsburg grapplers.
At 174 pounds,
Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) opened his tournament with a 4-1 sudden-victory loss to Sean Degl. Alderfer responded with a 5-2 decision over Bekhruz Sadriddinov and picked up 12-3 major decisions against both Sean Degl to earn his spot in the third-place match and defeated Sam Beckett with a 12-3 major decision to take third in the 174-pound bracket.
In the 197-pound bracket,
Coy Raines (North Chille, N.Y./Churchville-Chille) opened his day with an 11-0 technical fall loss to Tucker Hogan. Raines rebounded for an 8-1 decision over Jake Conroy and a 7-4 win over Kingston Daniells Silva. Raines defeated George Rhodes 10-8 in the third-place match to finish third overall in the 197-pound bracket.
Justin Jones (Orange County/Locust Grove) took fourth overall in the 125-pound bracket as he went 2-2 on the day. Jones opened his tournament with a 5-0 win over Connor Smith before Jack Parker won 4-1 in the second round. Jones earned a 19-8 major decision over Alex Reed but fell to Gregory Diakomihalis by pin at 1:36 in the third-place match to take fourth overall.
Michael Giugliano (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took sixth in the 141A bracket after going 1-3 on the day. Hayden Cunningham won 12-0 in the first round before Giugliano defeated Brecken Cieleski 19-4 in the second round. Giugliano closed out the tournament with a pair of tech fall losses to take sixth overall.
In the 149B bracket,
Jay Chase (Wallingford, Conn./Martin T Sheehan) finished sixth overall after going 1-3. Chase defeated Brendan Sholders 4-1 in his first match but dropped three-straight bonus point matches for the sixth-place finish.
Newcomer to the Huskies, Tim, Gray, went 3-3 in his Huskies' debut. Gray opened the day with a 14-3 major decision win over Max Ohamuo before dropping a 5-1 decision to Alex Bajoras. Gray rebounded with a 16-5 major decision over
Kyle Draina (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) and earned a fall at 2:13 over Talan Hogan. Gray dopped his final two matches to earn sixth overall in the 285 pound bracket..
Richie Woods (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 1-3 with a 7-1 win over Avery Vogelbacher at 141B pounds.
Gavin Mundy (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) picked up a pair of falls in the 133 pound bracket. Mundy pinned Jarren McCloskey at 2:24 in the first match and Brady Mercer at 2:07 in his third match of the day.
Gavin Martin (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) earned a fall at 1:09 over Logan Wadle in the 125 pound bracket.
The Huskies return to action next Thursday, January 29, when they visit MAC opponent Clarion for a 7:00 p.m. match.
