Huskies’ Defense Stands Tall as Bloomsburg Holds Off Millersville for Homecoming Victory, 20-14

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Behind another dominant performance against the run and a series of timely defensive stops, the Bloomsburg football team celebrated Homecoming with a hard-fought 20-14 victory over Millersville on Saturday afternoon at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.

The Huskies (6-2, 3-1 PSAC East) held the Marauders to just 65 rushing yards on 34 attempts, averaging 1.9 yards per carry, while collecting eight tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. Bloomsburg's defense delivered when it mattered most, protecting a six-point advantage throughout the fourth quarter to secure its second consecutive victory and sixth win of the season.

Nahzier Booker (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) led the defensive charge with a game-high 10 tackles, including nine solo stops and a half-sack. Garrett Garcia (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) and Dylan Clair (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College HS) added nine tackles apiece, with Garcia registering two tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Clair finished with 1.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack, while Ian Donohue (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) continued his disruptive season with two tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.

The Huskies' defensive front consistently limited Millersville's ground attack, holding leading rusher Mekhi Ashby to 60 yards on 21 carries. Bloomsburg also kept the Marauders out of the end zone in the fourth quarter despite two possessions that threatened to erase the Huskies' lead.

Offensively, Bloomsburg totaled 360 yards, including 204 through the air and 156 on the ground, while scoring three rushing touchdowns in the opening half.

Quarterback Zayd Etheridge (Bridgeport, Pa./Upper Merion) completed 12 of 15 passes for 204 yards without an interception and added a rushing touchdown. Alex Achenbach (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) delivered an outstanding all-around performance, totaling 125 yards from scrimmage with four receptions for 86 yards and six carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Declan Clancy (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) paced the rushing attack with 85 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, while Nick Ryan (Shenandoah, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) caught four passes for 73 yards.

The Huskies opened the scoring by capitalizing on an early defensive takeaway. With Millersville driving near midfield, Garcia pressured quarterback Tommy Hunsicker into an errant throw that Zay Pusateri (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) intercepted at the Marauders' 49-yard line.

Bloomsburg turned the takeaway into a methodical 15-play, 49-yard scoring drive that consumed 7:46 of the opening quarter. The Huskies converted three fourth downs during the possession, including a pair of fourth-and-1 opportunities, before Etheridge powered into the end zone from a yard out with 44 seconds remaining. Peter Kashynski (Falls Church, Va./Justice) added the extra point for a 7-0 advantage.

Millersville (0-8, 0-6 PSAC East) answered early in the second quarter when Caileb Howse connected with Nakhi Bullock for a 64-yard touchdown pass, tying the contest at 7 with 14:48 remaining before halftime.
The Huskies responded immediately with one of their most explosive possessions of the afternoon, marching 78 yards in seven plays. Etheridge directed the offense downfield before Achenbach capped the three-minute drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, restoring Bloomsburg's lead at 14-7 with 11:40 left in the second quarter.

Bloomsburg's defense helped preserve that advantage later in the period. After Millersville advanced into scoring position, Pusateri blocked Gryffin Mitstifer's 39-yard field goal attempt with 1:15 remaining, keeping the Marauders off the scoreboard.

The Huskies took advantage of the opportunity, quickly covering 81 yards in seven plays and just 1:02. Etheridge moved the offense downfield through the passing game, setting up Clancy's 4-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining in the half. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, but Bloomsburg carried a 20-7 lead into the locker room.

Millersville narrowed the deficit in the third quarter, taking advantage of favorable field position to put together a 13-play, 35-yard drive. Hunsicker found Howse for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 7:42 remaining, cutting the Huskies' advantage to 20-14.

From there, the Bloomsburg defense took center stage.

After a Huskies fumble gave Millersville possession at its own 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter, the Marauders assembled a lengthy 15-play drive that consumed nearly nine minutes. However, Bloomsburg refused to surrender the lead, stopping Millersville on fourth down at the Huskies' 32-yard line with 5:28 remaining.

The Huskies responded with an 11-play possession of their own, draining nearly five minutes from the clock before turning the ball over on downs with 29 seconds left.

Millersville managed to move the ball into Bloomsburg territory on its final possession, but the Huskies held on as time expired, completing the Homecoming victory in front of a pack house of Husky fans.

Bloomsburg controlled the football for 32 minutes and finished with 22 first downs compared with 15 for Millersville. The Huskies also converted four of five fourth-down opportunities, while their defense limited the Marauders to 247 total yards.

The victory continued a strong stretch for a Bloomsburg defense that entered the weekend among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's leaders in total defense, rushing defense and tackles for loss.

Bloomsburg will close its home schedule Saturday, Oct. 31, when the Huskies welcome West Chester to Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., with Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day festivities highlighting the afternoon.
