No. 11 Kutztown Hands Football First Road Loss of the Year

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team put together three scoring drives and received solid individual performances on both sides of the ball, but an explosive start by No. 11 Kutztown proved too much to overcome as the Golden Bears defeated the Huskies, 45-16, Saturday afternoon at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.

Bloomsburg (7-3, 4-2 PSAC East) entered the contest looking to build on its recent success, but Kutztown (9-1, 5-1 PSAC East) used a kickoff return touchdown, four passing touchdowns and a defensive score to take control of the conference matchup.

Despite the setback, the Huskies showed resilience offensively, producing scoring drives of 83, 69 and 73 yards against one of the top teams in NCAA Division II. Bloomsburg converted all three of its red-zone opportunities into points and did not allow a sack against the Golden Bears.

Justin Wolfe (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) led the receiving corps with seven catches for 59 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Zayd Etheridge (Bridgeport, Pa./Upper Merion) completed 16 of 28 passes for 166 yards and a score. Eli Zimmerman (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) contributed 106 all-purpose yards and a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) paced Bloomsburg with 10 tackles, while Garrett Garcia (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) added nine and Nahzier Booker (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) finished with eight, including a tackle for a loss of 13 yards.

Kutztown wasted little time establishing momentum as Noah Micks returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown just 13 seconds into the contest. Following a Bloomsburg three-and-out, the Golden Bears extended their advantage with a methodical 15-play, 64-yard drive that consumed 7:15 and ended with Judd Novak's 2-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Weaver.

Trailing 14-0, Bloomsburg responded with one of its most productive possessions of the afternoon. Beginning at its own 17-yard line, the Huskies moved 67 yards in 10 plays, with Declan Clancy (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) providing several key runs to establish the ground game. Etheridge connected with Xavier Diaz (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel) for an 18-yard gain on third down before finding Alex Achenbach (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) for 24 yards to move the ball to the Kutztown 21.

The drive stalled inside the red zone, but Peter Kashynski (Falls Church, Va./Justice) converted a 33-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to put Bloomsburg on the scoreboard.

Kutztown answered with consecutive touchdown drives in the second quarter. Novak found Noah Kracyla for a 5-yard touchdown to cap a 12-play, 74-yard possession before connecting with Benny Liles III on another 5-yard scoring pass to extend the Golden Bears' lead to 28-3 with 2:31 remaining before halftime.

The Huskies responded with their most efficient scoring drive of the game, moving 69 yards in just 1:14 to find the end zone before the break.

Starting at the Bloomsburg 31, Etheridge directed a 10-play possession that featured several important completions to Wolfe and Diaz. Wolfe hauled in a 14-yard reception to move the chains before Diaz added a 10-yard catch to advance the ball into Kutztown territory.

Facing third-and-10 at the Golden Bears' 26, Etheridge connected with Wolfe for 14 yards and another first down. After scrambling six yards to the Kutztown 6, Etheridge found Wolfe on a short pass to the right side for a 6-yard touchdown with 1:11 remaining in the half.

Kashynski added the extra point to cut the deficit to 28-10.

However, Kutztown responded quickly, moving 64 yards in eight plays over the final 1:02 of the half. Gavin Pereira connected on a 24-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Golden Bears into the locker room with a 31-10 advantage.

The Huskies' defense provided an early spark in the third quarter after Kutztown recovered a Bloomsburg fumble at the Huskies' 34-yard line. Rather than allowing the Golden Bears to capitalize on the short field, Bloomsburg forced a three-and-out, pushing Kutztown backward six yards before forcing a punt.

Kutztown eventually extended its lead midway through the third quarter when Novak found Luke Maxwell for a 14-yard touchdown, completing a six-play, 35-yard drive that made it 38-10.

The Golden Bears added their final touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Trey Lear intercepted an Etheridge pass and returned it 60 yards for a score, extending the lead to 45-10 with 10:56 remaining.

Bloomsburg continued to battle and put together another sustained scoring possession on its ensuing drive.

Beginning at its own 27-yard line, the Huskies marched 73 yards in 12 plays, taking 6:29 off the clock. Etheridge connected with Nick Ryan (Shenandoah, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) for a 16-yard completion on third-and-5 before Clancy added a 7-yard run on third-and-2 to extend the possession.

Later in the drive, facing fourth-and-4 at the Kutztown 31, Etheridge found Diaz for a 7-yard completion to move the chains. A roughing-the-passer penalty advanced the ball to the Golden Bears' 12-yard line.

Zimmerman took over from there, breaking free for an 11-yard rush to the 1-yard line before punching the ball across the goal line on the following play with 4:19 remaining. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the final margin at 45-16.

Wolfe's seven receptions highlighted the Bloomsburg passing attack, while Achenbach finished with three catches for 45 yards and Diaz added three receptions for 35 yards. Clancy led the ground game with 44 yards on 17 carries, and Zimmerman added 16 rushing yards and a touchdown on five attempts.

Zimmerman also contributed on special teams, collecting 75 yards on four kickoff returns and adding a 15-yard punt return to finish with 106 all-purpose yards.

Bloomsburg's defense produced several individual highlights despite Kutztown's offensive production. Thompson's 10 tackles led the Huskies, followed by Garcia's nine stops and Booker's eight tackles. Booker also registered a quarterback hurry, while Kole Hummer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) recorded a 7-yard sack and Eason Teribury (Troy, Pa./Troy Area) added a tackle for a 5-yard loss. Zay Pusateri (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) contributed four tackles and a pass breakup.

The Huskies finished with four tackles for loss totaling 28 yards and limited the Golden Bears to 128 rushing yards on 36 attempts, an average of 3.6 yards per carry. Kutztown did not score a rushing touchdown.

Kutztown finished with 350 yards of total offense, including 222 through the air. Novak completed 20 of 28 passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns, while Jaedyn Stewart led the rushing attack with 73 yards on 15 carries.

Bloomsburg totaled 248 yards of offense, including 166 passing and 82 rushing. The Huskies converted six of 14 third-down opportunities and their lone fourth-down attempt, while Kutztown converted seven of 12 third downs.

The Golden Bears held a 34:21 to 25:39 advantage in time of possession and scored on all five of their red-zone opportunities.

The loss snapped Bloomsburg's three-game winning streak and marked the Huskies' first road defeat of the season.

Bloomsburg wraps up the regular season next Saturday on the road as they travel to California (Pa.) for 12:00 p.m. contest.
