Baseball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep Over Holy Family to Open 2026 Season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team opened up the 2026 season with a dominant showing in a doubleheader against Holy Family on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies scored 22 runs in the sweep.
 
Bloomsburg (2-0) tallied 27 hits on the day while drawing 12 walks. Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) led the way with six hits, three runs and two doubles. Anthony Trommer (Trevose, Pa./Neshaminy) and Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) each notched home runs on the day. The maroon and gold held Holy Family (1-4) to just eight runs and one run.
 
Game One – Bloomsburg 9, Holy Family 0
 
After opening the second inning with a double, Trommer was brought home for the first run of the season by a Dylan Hirsh (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) double down the left field line.
 
The fourth inning saw the Huskies extend its lead on a pair of runs. A sacrifice-fly from Jace Jarmon (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Central) brought home Hirsh for the first run of the inning. Kress brought in the second run, scoring Judah Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) on a groundout to the shortstop.
 
Bloomsburg's bats got hot again in the sixth as Kress recorded his second RBI of the day on a single through the right side to score Matt Freda (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional).
 
Later in the frame, Mike Miller (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) recorded the first home run of the season, launching a grand slam down the leftfield line to make it 8-0 in favor of the Huskies.
 
Kress' third RBI of the day scored Jarmon to give Bloomsburg its final run of the day.
 
Brandon Wozniak (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke Area) got the start and the win for the maroon and gold, allowing just two hits and striking out two across four innings. Pete Modrovsky (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale), Bryce Danish (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) and Aiden Murphy (Mountaintop, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) combined for three strikeouts and no hits across three innings of relief.
 
Game Two – Bloomsburg 13, Holy Family 1
 
It took until the third inning for the scoring to begin in the nightcap with Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) bringing home Russo on an RBI-double. Balestrini was later brought home as Trommer blasted a home run over the fence for a two-run homer.
 
Freda made it 4-0 for Bloomsburg in the fourth inning, scoring Casey O'Brien (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) on an RBI-single.
 
The fifth frame saw Bloomsburg move to an 8-0 lead, with runs from M. Miller, Trommer and O'Brien. A five-run seventh innings pushed Bloomsburg into double-digit runs with 13. The Tigers notched their only run of the day in the fifth on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
 
Andrew Armstrong (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) went 3.2 innings after getting the start on the mound. The redshirt-sophomore struck out six batters and allowed just three hits.  Landon Lorson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) picked up the win as he gave up just one hits and struck out three in 2.1 innings pitched. Xander Velez (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Trevor Lugara (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Matthew Marsten (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) combined to pitch three innings of relief.
 
Bloomsburg heads to West Virginia next for three games, beginning with a bout against California (Pa.) on Friday, February 27 at 11 a.m.
