Softball Takes One and Drops One to Start Abe's Invitational

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Bloomsburg softball team wins one and drops one in Abe's Invitational to start the season.

The Huskies tallied 15 total runs on the day with 22 hits, 11 in each game. 

Allie Wenrich (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) had a great outings in both games with a total of three hits, five RBIs and two home-runs. Leadoff hitter Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) had the most hits on the team with five with no strikeouts. Sarah Yamrick (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) also impressed with a total of three hits, one RBI, five strikeouts and earned the win against Thomas More.

Game one - Bloomsburg 8, Thomas More 0

Yamrick started out hot for the Huskies as she struck out three of the first four batters for Thomas More. Kranzley and Yamrick then got on base so Carly Wywoda (Dupont, Pa./Holy Cross) could send Kranzley home on an RBI single. With two Huskies still on base, Wenrich stepped up to the plate to hit the ball out of the park to make the lead a demanding 4-0 in the first inning. Reagan Wiest (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) then tripled, Josie Straigis (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was walked and Gabby Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) was hit by pitch to load the bases for Taylor Welsh (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville). Welsh was also hit by pitch which sent Wiest in for another Husky run. 

In the fourth inning, Grace Baker (Richboro, Pa./Quakertown) was at third with Wywoda up to bat for the Huskies. Wywoda hit Baker home with an RBI single. 

In the fifth and final inning, Kranzley hit an RBI single to bring Welsh and Starr in to complete the Huskies authoritative start to the season by defeating Thomas More 8-0.

Game two - Bloomsburg 6, Lincoln Memorial 7

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Kranzley reached home off of an error by Lincoln Memorial's shortstop, making it 1-0.

Lincoln memorial then hit a three-run home-run to give the Railsplitters the lead. The Huskies tied it up in the top of the fourth with a Straigis and Welsh both reached home on walks with the bases loaded. The Railsplitters then brought in four to bolster the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

Sydney Thomas hit Alizabeth Schuler (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) home in the top of the fifth to make it 4-7. In the sixth inning, Wenrich was back for more, blasting a two-run homer to make it 6-7. The Huskies could not score anymore runs as the game ended 6-7 in Lincoln Memorial's favor.

On the Horizon:

The softball team will be back in action on March 1 to continue their play at Abe's Invitational. They will face Thomas More at 10 a.m. and Lincoln Memorial at 12:30 p.m.
