Baseball Completes Series Sweep Over Shippensburg

Bloomsburg won 5-4 and 10-8 to sweep Raiders for first time under Head Coach Mike Collins

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team completed the series sweep over Shippensburg, winning both legs of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader, 5-4 and 10-8, at Danny Litwhiler Field on Sunday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (15-6, 5-3 PSAC East) outscored Shippensburg (17-10, 4-4) 15-12 while getting outhit 20-10 on the day. Jeremy Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) and Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) each finished the day with three hits, with Russo posting four runs.

Game One – Bloomsburg 5, Shippensburg 4

It took until the bottom of the second for the first runs of the day, as a hit by pitch and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Russo. A hard-hit single through the gap in left allowed Jace Jarmon (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Central) and Jeremy Stine (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) to cross the plate and make it 2-0 for the Huskies.

A scoreless third inning set the stage for the maroon and gold in the bottom of the fourth. After Joe Levis (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) worked back an 0-2 count to a walk, an errant throw from the third baseman allowed Russo to reach base and advance an extra 90 feet to second. The next at bat saw Cawley line the first pitch to left field, scoring two in the process to move the lead to 4-0.

An RBI-double and a two-run home run in the top of the fifth pulled the Raiders back within one. Shippensburg tied the contest in the top of the seventh, as AJ Wenrich scored Will Oates on a fielder's choice.

Cawley put a runner on for the Huskies in the bottom of the seventh, reaching on a single to second base. Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) earned a trip to first after getting hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count.

Nathan Kress (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) lined out to the second baseman who attempted to double-up Cawley to end the inning. However, the throw was off the mark and rolled all the way past an unmanned third base and out of play. The ball out of bounds granted the Huskies' runner two bases each and walked of the game for Bloomsburg, 5-4.

Xander Velez (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) picked up the win, striking out three in the seventh inning. Starting Pitcher Aiden Murphy (Mountain Top, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) went six inning, allowing three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Game Two – Bloomsburg 10, Shippensburg 8

The nightcap saw Bloomsburg score early as two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. Justin Weaver (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) drove in the first run on a fielder's choice as the Raiders were unable to turn two on a grounder to the shortstop. A bunt from Trommer saw Cawley beat out the throw to home, doubling the Huskies' lead.

The Raiders choose to intentionally walk Balestrini in an attempt to turn a double play to end the inning.

Back-to-back singles from Weaver and Anthony Trommer (Trevose, Pa./Neshaminy) moved the Huskies to a 7-2 lead. Bloomsburg scored two more runs in the inning to take a 9-2 lead into the fourth.
