BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg used a dominant first-quarter surge and timely defensive stands down the stretch to secure a 15-12 PSAC East victory over Millersville on Wednesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Huskies (3-7, 2-4 PSAC East) set the tone early with an explosive opening period, scoring eight goals in the first 15 minutes to build a commanding advantage they would not relinquish.
After trading goals in the opening minute, Bloomsburg found its rhythm behind a balanced offensive attack. Goals from
Marykate Sitko (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and
Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) sparked a 3-0 run that turned a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead. Following a Millersville response, the Huskies closed the quarter on a decisive 4-1 burst, highlighted by back-to-back finishes from Sitko and
Delaney Fox (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) and capped by
Samantha Keck's (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) goal in the final minute to make it 8-3 after one.
Bloomsburg's defense played a key role in sustaining that early momentum, forcing failed clears and turnovers throughout the opening frame while limiting quality looks. The Huskies held Millersville to just five shots on goal in the quarter and consistently turned defensive stops into transition opportunities.
Millersville answered in the second quarter with a 2-0 run to cut the deficit to 8-5, but Bloomsburg responded at a critical moment. Sitko delivered an unassisted goal midway through the period to halt the momentum and push the lead back to four. Despite a late Marauder goal, the Huskies carried a 9-6 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter featured a back-and-forth stretch as Millersville continued to apply pressure, trimming the margin to two on multiple occasions. Each time, Bloomsburg had an answer.
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads) opened the scoring in the period on a man-up opportunity, and
Molly Clifford (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) later restored a three-goal cushion with a finish off a
Kayla Stressman (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) assist. Keck added another man-up goal in the closing seconds of the quarter to maintain a 12-10 lead heading into the final frame.
Defensively, the Huskies weathered several key situations in the third, including multiple free-position attempts and extra-player opportunities for Millersville. Goalkeeper
Emily Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made timely saves, while the back line—led by
AnnMarie Davenport (Elkton, Md./Elkton) and
Sophie Mellman (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood)—forced turnovers and limited second-chance opportunities.
Bloomsburg created separation early in the fourth quarter with a decisive 3-0 run. Stressman opened the period with a man-down goal, followed by a Fox finish and Austin's fourth goal of the game to extend the lead to 15-10 with just over two minutes remaining.
Millersville added two late goals, but the Huskies closed out the win with composed defensive possessions, including a forced turnover in the final seconds to seal the result.
Austin and Sitko led the offensive effort with four goals each, combining for eight of Bloomsburg's 15 scores. Keck added two goals and two assists, while Fox chipped in two goals as part of a well-distributed attack that saw seven different Huskies find the back of the net.
Defensively, Bloomsburg forced 21 Millersville turnovers and controlled key ground ball situations, finishing with a 21-17 edge. The Huskies also converted efficiently on clears, going 20-for-25 on the day.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday when they host Shippensburg at Steph Pettit Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. contest. Prior to the game, the Huskies will honor their seven seniors -
Brianna Austin (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh),
Emily Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./St. Anthony's),
Alexis Guzylak (Corning, N.Y./Horseheads),
Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton),
Drew Palumbo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive),
Danielle Preston (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn), and
Mikayla Viola (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus).
