Off Mat Updates
The wrestling team had nine wrestlers achieving over a 3.0 GPA; three wrestlers received a 4.0 this semester, and four others had a 2.9 or higher.  70% of our current roster was over a 2.85 GPA setting the foundation for this group of freshman and sophomores.  The team GPA is doing great!

BU wrestlers helped clean up and deliver Christmas Trees after Bloomsburg's annual Treefest on December 7. (Colby Baker, Shaun Heist, Max Good, Mike Mirra, Elliot Zackoski, and Brad Miccio)

TreeFest, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, begins with the area Christmas tree growers who donate over a hundred live trees to be trimmed. Then, hundreds of people – from community volunteers and youth groups, to florists and garden clubs set up and decorate the rooms and trees which are each sponsored by an area business or individual.

Throughout the event, local entertainment was provided from school choirs to dance groups and folk musicians performing in front of a seasonal mural. Adding to the holiday atmosphere, visitors were able to start their Christmas shopping with the dozens of professional craft artisans displaying their wares for sale, a gingerbread house contest and a special Chinese auction.

At the conclusion of activities, the trees are donated to area families in need, as identified by local social service agencies.

Rider Match on January 30
Please mark January 30 on your calendars.  The match with Rider will be Alumni Night this year.  Please come out and join our many Alumni and our team as we wreste Rider.  I will be posting the schedule of events soon.  There will be an event before the dual along with recognition of alumni during the match.  Hope to see everyone there!

On the Mat
December had great balance for the Huskies.  We had the PSAC Tournament and the Clarion match in the last couple weeks.  Having a week in between to train and focus on finals was needed for success.  Our practices have been very positive and we are starting to see results.  In both the PSAC Tournament and the Clarion match your Huskies were pushing the action having a many scoring attempts.  Clarion was a heart breaking loss, with Clarion edging us 42-41 on the tie-breaker (total match points).  Tanner Cahill received the EWL freshman of the week award by pinning Sam Sherlock (former two-time PSAC Champ).

Here are the stories from the month of December.

Off Mat Updates
21687A special thank you to everyone who attended the BU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction ceremony where former coach Roger Sanders was one of the six inductees for the night. Over 50 alumni came to support Roger on the big day. It was the first time in history the Bloomsburg Hall of Fame Dinner was sold out with wrestling represented well. Congrats to Roger once again on a milestone accomplishment.

Our wrestling team participated in community outreach program helping a food recovery drive for people in town. Our team worked a few hours helping many people in need along with meeting many people in town. Our program proudly represents the town of Bloomsburg and the University. We plan on participating with more community service in the future. 21686

The same night of Roger Sanders induction my wife and I had our third child. We now have two boys and one girl. Charlotte (3 years old), Cecil (2 years old), Benson (weeks old). Proud to add another Husky to the world. Both Benson and my wife are doing great.

On the Mat
The team started off the season wrestling #12-ranked Pitt in the first home meet of the year on Nov. 2. The 35-3 score didn't show the amount of fight our guys put toward the dual meet. Having 10 new starters will present a few new challenges to our program, but our wrestlers and coaching staff embrace the fight making gains daily. The next week we finished 6th at the Brockport Invite having five guys place in the top five. We will continue to create a positive working environment for this team. We are seeing improvement from the first week to the second.

Our red-shirts wrestled the past two weeks at the Clarion Open and the Binghamton Open. Chase Zemenak placed 4th at Clarion and first at Binghamton. Chase was the EWL Freshman of the Week for the week of November 10th. We had many other freshman go deep into both tournaments showing some good results from the younger group. Our red-shirts will continue to wrestle in open tournaments during the year to gain the experience.
Here are links from the last few weeks of competition.

Off Mat Updates
Our wrestling team would like to invite everyone to attend our practice this Saturday (October 12th) at Nelson Field House at 10 a.m. Our team will be wrestling matches before the football tailgating and homecoming game. This would be a great opportunity to see the guys in action then have a chance to support our football team afterwards.

Roger Sanders is being inducted into the Hall of Fame on October 18th. Roger is a great asset to our program and plays a very important role in Bloomsburg's wrestling success. His teams set records many wrestling fans thought impossible. Our wrestling staff is excited to be there supporting and representing Bloomsburg wrestling.

On the Mat
Our team is allowed eight hours a week to work out. This seems like a minimal number, however our wrestlers do extra workouts on their own. A typical week for our team is 11 workouts in six days. We have been doing individuals drills, running, lifting, and open mats.

Our work outs have been at 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with rest on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The Bloomsburg wrestling team is improving each week always looking for ways to improve their skills. Along with the wrestling our guys have class, tutoring, and six hours of study hall each and every week. Our team GPA goal remains at 3.0 with last year's team hitting the 3.01 mark. Bottom line the huskies are striving for excellence on and off the mat as we continue the commitment toward our great program.
October 15th is first day of official practice. This date will allow us to go from 8 hours a week to 20 hours per week. Our training will transition from running/lifting to mostly wrestling/lifting. Our team has improved their strength and conditioning every week since the start of school. Our bodies are ready for the grind!

Off Mat Updates
The annual golf outing/BBQ event was a success. We had over 50 golfers making up 15 teams during the opening weekend of school. The winning team was Tim Holter, Jerry Bancroft, Mark Peditto, and Jason Mester. Yes, I was on the winning team and I take zero credit for the win. Our team shot minus 19 only using two of my shots all day. The second place team was Coach Marcus Gordon's team. He will be gunning for us next year, along with a number of other people.

After the golf Ron and Laura Moore hosted a BBQ dinner less than one mile from the golf course. Ron and Laura are longtime supporters for Bloomsburg University Wrestling. Our program is very appreciative to have so many people willing to help out. We have great fans, alumni, parents, and wrestlers. Commitment in every area is important when making a program move forward. Our coaching staff is proud of the support we have received since our arrival last August.

Golf Outing/BBQ Event
The annual Golf Outing/BBQ event is taking place August 23rd. Right now we have 15 teams registered. If you have not contacted Coach Mester with names for your team please do so. We are expecting over 100 people for the barbeque engaging everyone with wrestling talk, games, and food. Attending the barbeque with be our current team members will be parents, staff, fans and many alumni. If you are not a golfer, feel free to attend the barbeque only.

On the Mat
Our team is currently at home lifting and running on their own. Once they get back on campus at the start of school we will begin lifting, conditioning, and executing individual drills.
We have added many new faces and are developing new role our wrestlers for the upcoming season. With a young team our staff is prepared for more individual time to develop our student-athletes both academically and athletically.

The wrestling staff does all the class checks and study hall hours to make sure the wrestlers are on the correct path in school. When it comes to wrestling we have a unique way to develop people. We do all the obvious things with technique, training, motivation, etc. To go above and beyond our staff also track minutes and specific stats (wrestling positions) on our wrestlers. Every individual drill, every practice, and every match is tracked to ensure success of the athlete and so our staff can make good decisions based on factual evidence. At the end of the month, we can give our athletes direct feedback with a breakdown of positions and minutes spent on each position.

Bloomsburg wrestling goes the extra mile, making this experience about the student-athlete. This system receives positive feedback from our athletes, coaching staff, and everyone involved with the program.

Off Mat Updates
Working in the Community
This month the wrestling team volunteered to help some faculty move into a new home. The moving process took seven hours with the homeowners very pleased that nothing was broken in the process. With wrestlers moving equipment, I would say that is a job well done. Our team is very good about doing community service and we plan on participating once a month.

Russ Houk's Induction into the PIAA Hall of Fame
Our wrestling staff attended the Russ Houk induction into the PIAA Hall of Fame in Harrisburg. Coach Houk was a tremendous leader for many young men in wrestling. We ran into Coach Houk's entire family and 20-25 alumni from the Houk-era. Bloomsburg wrestling has great tradition and has a number of amazing individuals who are responsible for decades of success. We enjoyed hearing the stories and watching Coach Houk's son Brad talk about the "good ole days". Congratulations to Coach Houk and his family for a milestone accomplishment. Bloomsburg University is very proud.

Game Day/Cook out at Coach Mester's House
Our coaching staff organized a game day and cookout with our wrestling team. With our staff coming in late summer this past year, we never had too many opportunities to have some fun with the guys. The game day consisted of eight events among teams of two. We had a total of 16 teams starting at 9 am and finishing the day at 10:30 pm with our car lights in the yard still playing two-on-two volleyball. The competition was fierce with many intense games. However Coach Gordon and Bryce Busler came away with the championship. This will become a yearly event because everyone had so much fun. There is talk about letting alumni enter next year having a two-day event. Here is the list of events that took place in the all day competition.
1. Home run Derby- Winner Veltre/Barker
2. Three-Point Contest- Winner- Coach Gordon/Busler
3. Billiards Tournament- Winner Coach Mester/Coach Lyon
4. Volleyball Tournament- Winner Coach Gordon/Busler
5. Kan Jam- Winner- Veltre/Barker
6. Bags - Winner - Coach Mester/Coach Lyon
7. Chipping Contest- Winner- Coach Gordon/Busler
8. Ladder Golf Throw- Winner - Zackoski/Arnsberger

Working in the Community
Our wrestling team volunteered for two events the past three weeks. The first being The Big Event. The Big Event is where the student of Bloomsburg University join together and have a spring cleaning day throughout the town. The Bloomsburg wrestling team was placed at the softball fields to rake leaves. We decided to rake the leaves in fields, then helped three or four other groups with their area, including ripped bushes out of a yard. The Big Event Staff gave our group nine bags to fill up. We filled nine bags in less than twenty minutes and need more work. As wrestlers we could not do the bare minimum. Our crew did a great job making a big impact on the amount of leaves/bushes removed from the area. Yes, all the coaches got dirty showing the young guys how to work.
The second event was the MAWA Regional Wrestling tournament at Shamokin PA. This was a two-day event with our team doing the table help for the entire tournament. I am proud of the guys taking time out of their weekend to help people in the community. Most important I am proud the way each of them handle themselves in the public. Everyone works hard and very respectful to people involved.

Looking ahead

Finals and Team GPA-
We are very excited to make the final push in school. There is four weeks remaining in the school year and staying focused for finals is key when striving for a high team GPA. A team GPA of 3.0 has been a team goal all year with many of the guys excited to accomplish this feat.

Graduation-
We have 15 seniors graduating this spring. We plan on having a senior picnic for all the guys with a challenge tournament. There is a great deal of trash talk around this challenge tournament with the coaching staff confident we will win. I will have more details in the next newsletter. Old school vs new school.....we all know who will take the title.

Off Mat Updates
The Bloomsburg wrestling team recently had the opportunity to learn from University of Missouri professor, Dr. Brandon Orr, one of the top sport psychologists in the country, who has a unique resume for college athletics.

Dr. Orr was a three-sport athlete at the collegiate level excelling in football, wrestling, and track. After college Dr. Orr focused his time in the coaching world of football, eventually becoming the academic advisor for the University of Missouri continuing his passion for college athletics. Academically he continued his growth by earning his doctorate in sports psychology.

Dr. Orr knows every aspect of the process student athletes must endure to become successful, along with being a great role model, very positive, and a great friend of mine. Our team loved having him around for a week and learning from him. Our staff learned many new methods on how to train an athlete's mind helping the Bloomsburg wrestling program grow!!

Here is a link on Dr. Orr

George Mason Dual
Winning nine of the 10 weights in the dual, Senior Day, and Mike Dessino getting his 100th win. We wrestled well, creating many positions and winning most of them. That afternoon we had 15 seniors recognized on Senior Day. Our staff is very grateful to have the opportunity to guide this group down the path of success. We will do everything in our power to help them accomplish their goals in March and with graduation in May.

National Duals
Going 0-2 at the duals was very deceiving for people who did not see the tournament. Both Richard Perry and Justin Grant were able to beat opponents who had beaten them early in the season. Perry pinned the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country avenging his only loss of the year. Grant beat his opponent in overtime after losing by decision early in the season. As a team Oklahoma edged the Huskies, 21-15, in a very competitive match.

Congrats to Richard Perry on being named the EWL (and PSAC) Wrestler of the week for his big win.

Upcoming Events-

Off Mat Updates
School is back in session with our wrestling staff hitting the class checks and study hall hard. Our wrestlers are off to a great start early in the semester to ensure a good GPA in the end. Setting a positive pace early in school is very important if a student is striving toward a GPA of 3.0 and higher.

Virginia Duals
The Huskies went 1-2 at Virginia Duals beating Bucknell in the opening round. But, eventually losing to Kent State and Nebraska Kearney. We made a few mistakes in both matches getting us pinned in a few bouts. We have to be smarter in situations along with staying on the attack.

Thank you for all of the support at the tournament. We had a number of fans there cheering us on. Here is the article from the event.
Story Day 1
Story Day 2

Rider Dual
Every loss has a balance of positives and negatives. Our team came away with many positives from the Rider match. After losing the match our staff worked with individuals the next day working on many of the issues. Our team does a great job in responding every week when it comes to making adjustments on mistakes. This was our third loss in a row, however our coaching staff and wrestlers continue to improve working toward the goals we have set in place. Read the post-match story.

Hofstra Dual
A great win for the Huskies! Five pins in this dual made the event very interesting. We had three pins and Hofstra pinned us twice. The bottom line our guys kept wrestling no matter what the score. The Huskies trailed Hofstra 21-15 with 174 and 184 left to wrestle. Mike Dessino gave up a late first period take down and continued to wrestle pinning the opponent with one second left in the first. Bottom line is the guys who keep wrestling will always have luck on their side. Our team wrestled well, taking the fight to Hofstra and creating great situations for our team. Here is the meet story.

Edinboro Dual
Edinboro wrestled a great dual, and my hat is off to everyone involved with that program. We plan on working hard from now until the EWL tournament to make up for some of the losses in the month of January. Congratulations to Richard Perry on getting his 100th victory in this dual. That is a great accomplishment in college, taking an endless amount of hard work and discipline. He told me after the match it's a great feeling to win 100 matches, but winning a National Title is what he works for. He is focused right now keeping his goals in perspective, not being distracted by anything. Here is the match story.

We are at home three matches in a row!!! Hope to see everyone there!!

Off Mat Updates
The goal coming into the school year was to increase the team GPA which was 2.6 last year. Our staff and team dedicated a great amount of effort to achieve a goal of 3.0 GPA. However, the grades came in for this semester and the team came in with a mark of 2.85. We are moving in the right direction and will work harder next semester to reach our goal. We want Bloomsburg wrestling to be in the top 20 for team GPA showing the country we are competitive both on and off the mat. Good habits have to surround an individual in all aspects of their life in order to create good working habits in the wrestling room. We will create great people ready to be successful in the work world when graduating from Bloomsburg University.

Lock Haven Dual
Bloomsburg won majority of the close matches in this dual giving us the advantage. Sean Boylan, Nick Wilcox, Mike Dessino and Kevin Hartnett edged their opponents putting the dual meet out of reach for the Bald Eagles. Both Matt Rappo and Sam Shirey wrestled nationally ranked opponents down to the last second making the dual meet exciting. Winning the dual marked the tenth year in a row Bloomsburg has defeated Lock Haven! Here is the article with official results. http://www.buhuskies.com/news/2013/12/19/WREST_1219133453.aspx

Cradle Gear Open

Bloomsburg had six place winners at the Cradle Gear Open finishing second as a team. Having three starters out of the tournament the team responded getting a good amount of bonus points to give us a chance to place high. Bloomsburg had three champions (Wilcox, Dessino, and Richard Perry), two second place finishers (Boylan and JustinGrant) with Rappo taking third place. The team race was tight for second between Bloomsburg and Lock Haven. Perry ended up pinning his guy in the last match of the tournament with one second left to give us the half of point victory over Lock Haven. Our team is wrestling seven minutes every match building good habits in the next few months in preparation for March. Off Mat Updates
The wrestlers have final exams this week. Our student-athletes have been preparing hard for finals along with our wrestling staff. The wrestling staff does weekly class checks on each wrestler. We get progress reports from professors and run study hall three times a week for two hours at a time. Our results will reflect the work we put in, so helping the students in every way possible is top priority. This semester each coach did 180 class checks and put 30 hours into study hall. Yes, those numbers are correct. We keep track of everything when it comes to numbers. We track class checks, study hall hours, practice room minutes, weight room minutes, and stats on each wrestler for every position. We love numbers and organization only to make our student athletes into successful people.

Madison Square Garden Event
The score did not show how close our dual was with Illinois. This dual was very unique having five pins and taking only sixty five minutes to complete. On a good note we pinned two of their ranked wrestlers, however they pinned three of our guys also edging some of our best wrestlers to a loss. After Illinois we beat the University of Pennsylvania in a close dual. It was nice beating an in-state school showing we could bounce back after a tough match.

Here is the link to the Madison Square Garden Event-

PSAC Tournament- 2nd Place

The PSAC tournament was held at Edinboro last week with the host school winning the team title. They have a solid team and we look forward to competing against them throughout the year. It was nice to see the conference for the first time as a new staff. We will be making plenty of adjustments to win key matches late in the season. Our staff was pleased how our team wrestled in a few positions over the weekend moving forward from the week before.

Here is the Link to the PSAC event-

Upcoming Events

12/19- at Lock Haven Dual Meet
12/29- Cradle Gear Tournament at Lock Haven

This team has a lot to learn and our staff is optimistic in fixing mistakes that continue to cost us matches. We have increased development by having group video review on our off days. The review has been very positive and we focus the video clips on our weakness and our strengths to develop our wrestlers technique, but more importantly in their decision-making. This will pay off in the long run as we are very eager to get back out there.

Have a great holiday season!

Thoughts on team
The last couple weeks we have seen progression in our shape, and with technique. Our staff was pleased Sunday winning the Keystone Classic. We outlasted Northwestern, Indiana, and Pitt coming down to the last round. Our guys were getting bonus points, winning close matches, and making the matches very hard on the opponents. We beat two Arizona State guys on Sunday that we lost to Friday night in the dual. We also avenged a loss to the Campbell heavy weight for third where Justin Grant got the pin after losing to that wrestler earlier in the tournament. These are the key ingredients our team will need to succeed in March.

Arizona State Dual
We had a very close dual versus Arizona State winning 18-15. The difference was bonus points at three weight classes. Most duals are fun, but this one was unique for me. It was my first home dual meet as a head coach along with the opposing coach (Shawn Charles) who was my coach when I was a young wrestler back at Central Michigan. He is a great person and coach as I have a great amount of respect for him. However it was fun to compete against him. I also enjoyed the Alumni Night. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. There was a lot of old stories and food going around the gym, but I enjoyed seeing the commitment people have, taking the time out of their busy schedule to come back. It's great to see the end result of how coaching affects so many people lives in a positive way. Everyone had a great time and seemed to have nice things to say about their experience at Bloomsburg. Here is the link for official results of the Arizona State Dual
http://www.buhuskies.com/news/2013/11/22/WREST_1122133900.aspx

Keystone Classic- 1st Place Team

We lost a number of close matches early in this tournament and continued to rally. We will build off this showing in a number of ways. Here are the results weight by weight.

125- 0-2
133- 4th Place
141-4th Place
149-2nd Place
157- 3-2
165- 1st Place
174- 4th Place
184- 5th Place
197- 1st Place
285- 3rd Place

Upcoming Events

12/1- Madison Square Garden
12/7- PSAC Championships

Madison Square Garden we wrestle Illinois and the University of Penn. Illinois has a number of great young wrestlers who will push us in many situations, Penn has a few key match ups for us, and they are looking to avenge some losses from the Keystone Classic. Either way our team will have to wrestle on a high level again this weekend. We have a great schedule and our guys will be "Battle Ready" when March comes around.

I wish everyone to have a great Thanksgiving and GO HUSKIES!

I felt the team had a good showing at the Brockport Open. Oklahoma seemed to show us how to wrestle at a number of weights , however our staff felt like our mistakes are very coachable by March and very excited about some big wins we had that day. Bryce Busler and Josh Veltre won titles, while Richard Perry beat the #13 ranked wrestler from American in the semi's before dropping the finals match to returning All-American Travis Rutt. Bryce beat the returning national champion Kendrick Maple in the finals 5-3 OT. Bryce won the OW of the tournament, and the EWL wrestler of the week for his victory. Josh Veltre had a solid day beating a ranked opponent in the finals making very few mistakes all day.

Here are the results from the Brockport Tournament. Bloomsburg came in 2nd place behind Oklahoma.
Boylan - 4th Dessino 3rd
Wilcox - 2nd Shirey - 4th
Rappo- 6th Perry- 2nd
Busler - 1st. Grant - 3rd
