22733

The 2015 season marked the 20th anniversary of the most celebrated team in Bloomsburg University baseball history - the 1995 team that won a school record 37 games and reached the NCAA Division II World Series for the first time in the history of the program. Bloomsburg finished that year with a 37-21 overall record and went 14-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. The Huskies won the North Atlantic Regional Championship with an 11-7 victory over Mansfield in the regional title game on May 20, 1995 in Erie, Pa. to earn a trip to the national championships in Montgomery, Ala.

On April 18, 2015 against Shippensburg, the Huskies paid tribute to the 1995 team, welcoming those players back to Danny Litwhiler Field to be honored as part of the University's All-Athletic Alumni Day.

1995 In Review

The 1995 Bloomsburg University baseball team experienced its finest season in school history, culminating with the Huskies' first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Head Coach Matt Haney's squad got off to a fast start, going 10-5 in an early stint in Florida. The Huskies continued to display confidence and sound execution, as they reeled off a school-record 11-game winning streak, putting Bloomsburg in excellent position to challenge for a berth in the PSAC Championships.

After a doubleheader sweep of Wilkes, the Huskies earned their first-ever national ranking, jumping into the Top 25 poll at the No. 19 position.

Bloomsburg suffered a midseason slump, falling to 8-5 in the PSAC East, but righted themselves with another six-game winning streak to jump back into contention. During that time, a 7-6 win over York (Pa.) gave Haney his 100th career win.

The Huskies and Shippensburg finished the regular season tied for second in the PSAC East with 14-6 records. To break the tie, the teams met at Kutztown for a play-in game after the squads split their four games during the regular season. The Huskies chipped away at Red Raider starter Ben Berra, scoring runs in the first three innings for a 3-0 lead. Bloomsburg starter Brent Beiler carred a shutout into the seventh before the Red Raiders scored two runs in that inning to cut the Huskies lead to 3-2. With Bloomsburg leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Bloomsburg scored three insurance runs. John Stillo keyed the three-run outburst with a triple. Chet Henicle followed with an RBI double as the Huskies carried a four-run lead to the ninth. In the final inning, Jed Custer nailed down his 11th save of the season as Bloomsburg earned a 7-3 victory.

Bloomsburg won its first game at PSAC Championships over Slippery Rock, 7-6, to move into the winner's bracket. The Huskies then overcame a five-run deficit and rallied for a 6-5 win over Mansfield behind a complete game on the mound by Jon Fritz. Chet Henicle and Todd Myers led the comeback with two hits apiece. Bloomsburg was swept by Mansfield in the next two games of the double-elimination tournament, but the Huskies still earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament as the regional selection committee gave the Huskies an at-large bid. Chet Hencile was named PSAC Championships Co-Most Valuable Player along with Mansfield's John Michael Cook.

The Huskies traveled to Erie for the North Atlantic Regional, facing PSAC East rival Mansfield in the first game of the double-elimination tournament. Chad Arnold rose to the occasion for Bloomsburg, tossing a complete game nine-hitter as the Huskies stifled Mansfield, 7-1, in game one. John Stillo went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Ben Henicle added two hits with three RBI and Jon D. Fritz contributed two RBI.

In game two, Bloomsburg played host Mercyhurst and Beiler pitched eight solid innings with Myers drawing a bases loaded walk to snap a 4-4 tie in the Huskies' 5-4 win over the Lakers, setting up a re-match with Mansfield.

Bloomsburg lost the first game to the Mountaineers, 10-7, setting up a winner-take-all in the second game.

Rob Harter started the game, but was forced to leave in the second inning due to a sore elbow. Arnold again rose to the occasion, pitching eight innings of relief in Bloomsburg's 11-7 victory, giving Bloomsburg its first-ever berth in the NCAA Championship round. The hitting was supplied by Chet Henicle, Ben Henicle and Keith Kabrhel, each with three hits apiece in a 14-hit Bloomsburg attack.

Bloomsburg made the trip to Montgomery, Ala., for the Division II Championships, dropping game one to top-ranked Florida Southern, 7-0, but then defeated Ashland, 9-4, behind solid pitching from Jon Fritz and home runs from John Godshall and Dave Moser. Bloomsburg's fine season came to a close in the third round as Valdosta State defeated BU, 9-2. The Huskies finished the year with 37 victories, one of 22 school records set during the year.

Named a First Team All-American, Arnold was joined on the All-North Atlantic Region Team by Chet Henicle and Custer. Three-time All-PSAC pick Matt Croyle also finished his Huskies career with a 21-game hitting streak.

Croyle was named First Team All-PSAC at third base while Chet Henicle (OF), Chad Arnold (SP) and Jed Custer (RP) were also first team all-conference picks. Jon D. Fritz (C) and Jon Fritz (SP) were second team picks.
