Sunny Gelnovatch enters her first season as the graduate assistant coach of the Bloomsburg University women's soccer program in 2020. She joins the Huskies after a decorated four-year career at Messiah College.
Gelnovatch helped the Falcons to the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2019 as Messiah defeated William Smith College, 1-0, in the title game to finish with a 22-1-3 overall record. She was named a First Team All-American by both United Soccer Coaches and Division3.com while also earning First Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference honors following the championship season.
She was the Mid-Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2016 after scoring eight goals and six assists for 22 points in her freshman campaign. That season, she helped the Falcons to the conference championship as well as a national runner-up finish.
A four-time First Team All-Conference selection, Gelnovatch finished her four-year career with 31 goals and 27 assists for 89 points. She was also a three-time First Team All-Region honoree and a two-time All-American after also earning Second Team accolades in 2017. The Falcons went 80-7-9, won three conference titles, and advanced to the NCAA tournament all four years during her career.
Gelnovatch interned with the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville Albemarle last summer where she helped coach the 9-12 and 13-16 age groups. She was also a volunteer assistant at Albemarle High School in the summer of 2019. Gelnovatch also worked numerous camps including at both the University of Virginia and at Messiah.
Hailing from Earlysville, Virginia, Gelnovatch is the daughter of long-time University of Virginia head men's soccer coach, George Gelnovatch, who led the Cavaliers to national titles in 2009 and 2014. He is the all-time winningest coach in program history with 338 career victories. Her brother, Jake, is a fifth-year senior goalkeeper at Louisville.
Gelnovatch graduated from Messiah in 2020 with a degree in sport management.
