Marty Coyne is in his 26th season as head coach of the Bloomsburg men's tennis team in 2018-19. He is also in his 25th year at the helm of the women's squad. His combined record as head coach is 575-346.
On the men's side in 2017-18, Coyne coached a unique squad consisting of all freshmen. The men went 5-9 and 2-3 in conference to qualify for the PSAC Team Championships where they fell to Mercyhurst in the semifinals. The tandem of Lucas Pedrotti and Nagid Walle was named All-PSAC second team in doubles play. On the women's side, the Huskies went 9-6 and a perfect 5-0 in the PSAC East to capture their first division title since 2013-14. Coyne coached All-PSAC East first team selections in Giovanna Bonito and Vitoria Nery, while Nery and doubles partner Cassidy Calimer were named to the PSAC East second team for doubles play. Coyne also garnered his ninth all-time Coach of the Year honor on the women's side.
While in charge of the men's program, he has led the team to 14 appearances in the NCAA Division II Championships, advancing to the quarterfinal round in 1996, 1997, and 2003. He was also the coach for part of the school's 14 consecutive PSAC championships (1987-2000) and is a five-time PSAC Men's Coach of the Year. He was named East Region Coach of the Year following the 1995-96 and 2002-03 campaigns. Before the PSAC changed championship formats, Coyne coached 37 PSAC singles champions and 16 doubles titlists. Coyne holds the distinction of being one of the few individuals to win a PSAC title as both a player and coach. His overall record with the men's team is 260-199 (.567)
On the women's side, he has led the squad to 13 trips to the NCAA Division II Championships and seven PSAC crowns - five solo and two shared titles. During his 24 years with the program, the Huskies have an overall record of 315-147 (.682) with 18 PSAC singles and five doubles champions before the change to a team championship format. Coyne is also a nine-time PSAC Coach of the Year winning the honor in 1995, 1996, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2014, and 2018. On a regional level, Coyne was named the ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year award following the 2006 season after previously earning the honor in 2004. He was named PSAC East Women's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading the Huskies to a PSAC East regular season title.
A former player at Bloomsburg, Coyne was an eight-time conference champion and one of the Huskies' first All-America performers. He was named to the All-America team in 1983. He also won every singles and doubles conference championships he competed for while playing with the Huskies. Coyne finished with a career record of 112-29, placing him second on the all-time winning percentage list.
He served as director of tennis at the Upper Bucks County YMCA in Quakertown prior to returning to Bloomsburg. Coyne has worked with numerous MSTA-ranked players as well as nationally ranked juniors. Coyne is a 2013 inductee into the United States Tennis Association Middle States Hall of Fame.
A native of Hazleton, Coyne received a bachelor's degree in business education from Bloomsburg in 1983. He was honored in 1998 with induction into the Bloomsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame.
