Dan Kreiger enters his sixth season at the helm of the Bloomsburg University volleyball program in the fall of 2023 after being named the program’s first-ever head coach in June of 2017.
Last season, Bloomsburg went 4-10 in conference play and finished the season with an overall record of 6-21. Under the guidance of Kreiger, middle hitter Liz Bopp earned a spot on the All-PSAC East Second Team after accumulating 168 kills and 68 blocks. Bopp, Emily Jackson and Maura Ushock were also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Teams following the season.Â
Â
The Huskies had a record-breaking year in 2021 as the team reached the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament for the first time in program history after going 6-8 in conference play and 12-17 overall. Both win totals were program records as well.
Â
Graduate student Alyssa Cianciulli set the bar for defensive specialists at BU under Coach Kreiger as she finished her career with 2,142 digs in just three seasons in Maroon & Gold. Following the 2021 season, Cianciulli was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year and was the Huskies’ first All-PSAC East First Team honoree. She was the NCAA statistical champion with 7.00 digs per set that season and was named an All-Atlantic Region honoree by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). Senior Sydney Buell was named to the All-PSAC East second team as well.
Kreiger’s third season leading the Huskies was affected by COVID-19, and Bloomsburg did not compete on the hardwood. The Huskies have a 28-61 record in his four seasons and are 13-38 in conference play.
Â
Kreiger guided the Huskies to a 10-22 record during his second season, including the program’s first win over Slippery Rock. The Huskies set the record for most total blocks in a match (14.0) against Felician and Pitt-Johnstown while trying the most aces with 13 against Lock Have and Kutztown. Junior Alyssa Cianciulli earned the program’s first-even All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) award with her second-team honor as a libero. Cianciulli also earned a pair of All-Atlantic Region honors from the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) and from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). She was a Second Team honoree according to the D2CCA organization and then captured Honorable Mention laurels from the AVCA.
Â
In his first year at the helm, Kreiger led Bloomsburg to a 6-22 record in the program’s inaugural season. The Huskies needed to play just their second-ever match to pick up the program’s first win as Bloomsburg defeated Virginia Union 3-1 at the Walsh Tournament on Friday, August 31. The Huskies finished the year with a 2-16 record in the PSAC.
Â
Kreiger is no stranger to the PSAC after spending five seasons – the last four as the head coach – at Lock Haven University from 2011 to 2015. Last season, he was a volunteer assistant coach at Clarion University in the fall before heading to Juniata College to serve as the assistant men’s volleyball coach.
Â
In his four seasons as the head coach at Lock Haven, Kreiger guided the Bald Eagles to an 88-49 overall record and a 55-30 mark against PSAC opponents. Under Kreiger, Lock Haven qualified for the PSAC Tournament in each of his four years at the helm and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The program earned PSAC Eastern Division regular-season titles in 2012 and 2014 and was the tournament runner-up in 2012.
Â
In 2011 – his first season at Lock Haven – he served as the associate head coach and helped guide the program to a 21-10 record, the PSAC Eastern Division regular-season title, and a PSAC Tournament runner-up finish. Lock Haven also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament that year.
Â
Overall, Kreiger helped coach four student-athletes to All-American honors, three PSAC East Players of the Year, 12 All-Region accolades, and 19 All-PSAC merits in his five seasons with the Bald Eagles.
Â
During his stay at Lock Haven, Kreiger also served as the chair of the Regional Advisory Committee for the Atlantic Region.
Â
After graduating from Penn State Altoona in 2003 with a bachelor of science degree in human development and family studies, Kreiger began his collegiate coaching career at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. He served as the head coach for the NCAA Division II program from 2005 to 2009. He led the team to three consecutive postseason playoff appearances and averaged 14 wins each of those seasons. Also, during that time, he was a part of the NCAA Southeast Region All-Region committee.
Â
With his positions at Lock Haven and St. Andrews, Kreiger brings an overall record of 135-137 in nine seasons as a head coach.
Â
Before his stint at Lock Haven, Kreiger was the assistant women’s coach at the University of North Carolina Pembroke and then at Georgetown College, where he also was the recruiting coordinator. While working at Georgetown College, he also founded and served as the club director for the Volleyball Academy of Lexington. In 2009, he served as the NCAA representative for the 2009 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Regional Championships.
