BLOOMSBURG –
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem, Liberty)scored a game-high 24 points in her collegiate debut to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to an opening-season win, 100-44, Monday evening at the Nelson Field House.
The Huskies opened the first half on an 8-0 run as
Lauren Ellis (Bangor, Bangor) converted on a lay-up at 19:45 and then back-to-back three-pointers from
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South) and
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Liberty) put BU early with 18:39 left in the first half.
Penn State-Schuylkill (0-1) got on the board with a pair of free throws from Bree Green, cutting the lead to six at 8-2 BU with 18:12 remaining in the first half.
Noack put the game out of reach midway through the first half, knocking down one of her six three-pointers on the game to extend the Bloomsburg lead to 20 at 28-8 with 9:45 remaining.
At the 3:42 mark, Noack put the Huskies up by its largest first-half lead of 29 when she knocked down another shot from beyond the arc to make it 43-14 BU.
The Huskies went into halftime with a 45-20 advantage and continued to pour on the points in the second half.
Penn State-Schuylkill's Shanita Cottman cut the lead to 45-23 out of the break with a three-pointer, but the Huskies went on a 25-11 run to make it 70-34 with 10:56 remaining in the game. The duo of Ellis and Noack chipped in 16 points during the streak.
In the final 10 minutes of the season-opener, Bloomsburg dominated, bursting out on a 30-10 run that put the team up on two different occasions by a game-high 59 points.
The last time the Huskies put up 100 points in a game was when the team played the Lady Lions last season, winning 103-48.
The Huskies went 36-of-78 (46.2%) from the floor and 12-of-26 (46.2%) from beyond the arc.
Noack went 8-of-12 from the field, including 6-for-10 from three-point range. She also added nine rebounds. Ellis finished with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting with nine boards. Wieller posted 20 points on 7-of-18 and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Gallagher finished 6-of-14 from the floor, bringing down eight rebounds.
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland, Hazleton Area) added eight assists and
Sydney Mallory (Philadelphia, Prep Charter) grabbed seven boards in the victory.
Cottman lead the Lady Lions with 12 points on 3-of 14 shooting.
Bloomsburg (1-0) is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 20, as the team hosts Chestnut Hill. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
