BLOOMSBURG –
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Liberty)scored a game-high 20 points as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team downed the Griffins of Chestnut Hill, 78-61, on Saturday evening at the Nelson Field House.
Bloomsburg (2-0) had four other players score in double figures in the victory.
Lauren Ellis (Bangor, Bangor) opened up the scoring and put the Huskies up 2-0 with 19:36 remaining on a lay-up unassisted.
The Griffins scored four straight points to take an early 4-2 lead with 17:57 remaining in the first half after Marqesah Spicer and Ebony Washington hit back-to-back buckets.
Chestnut Hill (2-1) went up by as many as nine points with 10:26 remaining after a pair of Washington free throws made it 21-12 Griffins.
Bloomsburg answered and stormed back, going on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to just two at 21-19 with 8:59 remaining before the break.
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South) started the spurt with a lay-up as she took the pass from
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland, Hazleton Area) and sank the bucket.
Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville, Perkiomen Valley) followed with a basket of her own, driving the lane and sinking the lay-up to make it 21-16 with 9:52 left in the half. Gallagher concluded the run when she drained a three-pointer to make it 21-19.
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem, Liberty)gave the Huskies their first lead since the opening bucket when she nailed a shot from beyond the arc, giving BU the 24-23 edge with 7:00 remaining.
Flanagan gave Bloomsburg their largest first-half lead at seven with a pair from the line to make it 37-30 at the 1:44 mark. Bloomsburg took a 37-32 lead into halftime.
Wieller started the second half with a three-pointer and the Huskies led by a game-high 22 points after two free throws from Ellis with 14:45 to go in the game, putting the score at 54-32 Bloomsburg.
The Griffins got the lead down to as little as 10 points with 9:14 remaining in the game after a Aiesha Smith jumper, but the Huskies pushed the lead back to 22 points on two more occasions late in the second half.
Wieller finished with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting and 3-of-3 from the line. Ellis posted 14 points on 5-of-11 from the floor, going 4-of-4 from the line with five boards. Gallagher chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Nyce carded 12 points on 3-of-7 from the floor and went 6-of-6 from the foul line. Noack also scored 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the victory.
Cecelia Herald and Washington led the Griffins with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
The Huskies shot 28-of-69 (40.6%) from the field and 15-of-16 (93.8%) from the foul line.
Bloomsburg (2-0) returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, as the Huskies travel to take on the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
