BLOOMSBURG—
Nikki Shiko (Shamokin, Southern Columbia)went a combined 4-7 and drove in five runs and
Emily Young (Nescopeck, Central Columbia) hit a grand slam in game two as the Bloomsburg University softball team swept a pair of games from Mansfield winning 12-0 and 8-0. Both games were called after five innings. The Huskies have now 21 straight games.
The Huskies grabbed control of the opener after scoring seven times in the bottom of the second. Bloomsburg sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning getting four hits and taking advantage of three base on balls and two hit batters in the frame. The big hit of the inning was a bases loaded triple by Shiko and a run scoring single by
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa, Southern Columbia).
In the bottom of the third inning the Huskies tacked on five more runs with
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) driving home two with a single and
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore)getting an RBI triple.
Pitcher
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay, Allentown Central Catholic) closed out the five-inning game allowing just a lead-off single in the fifth, but getting the next three batters in order. Fisher finished with a two-hitter and five strikeouts.
Game two was scoreless through the first two innings before the Huskies broke through in the bottom of the third. In the home third Lazorka reached on a error and moved to second on a bunt. Lazorka then scored on a single by
Sam Pientack (Archbald, Valley View) to make it 1-0.
The Huskies then put the game out of reach with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bloomsburg opened the inning with five straight hits with Shiko getting one of them, an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Lazorka singled in one run with single and Mauro hit a sacrifice fly plating another run for a 4-0 lead. Pientack then singled to load the bases and one out later, the lefty hitting Young, hit an opposite field shot giving the Huskies an 8-0 margin.
Pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon, Lebanon) closed out the win with a perfect fifth inning to earn the victory. The freshman struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Bloomsburg, 37-3, leads the PSAC Central Division with a record of 14-0. The Huskies play at IUP on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
