BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games with Kutztown University on Saturday winning the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap, 7-3. The loss in game two snapped a 22-game winning streak for the Huskies, ranked sixth in Division II.
In game one, the Huskies got on the board first with a second inning run.
Emily Young (Nescopeck, Central Columbia) reached on an error and
Mandy Koch (Dauphin, Central Dauphin) walked putting runners on first and second. After a strikeout,
Casey Massimini (Downingtown, Downingtown West) bunted the runners over to second and third.
Nikki Shiko (Shamokin, Southern Columbia) then singled home Young for a 1-0 lead.
It stayed 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Huskies tacked on a second run. Massimini singled and Shiko walked putting two on with no outs. After a bunt moved the runners up,
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore) had a bunt single scoring Massimini with the second run. Kutztown escaped further damage by retiring the next two batters.
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay, Allentown Central Catholic) worked out of the game and earned her 23rd win of the season. Shiko finished 2-2 with an RBI, while Fisher fanned eight.
In game two, Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bloomsburg got one back in the bottom of the first when
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport, Jersey Shore) tripled and scored on a Mauro sacrifice fly. Kutztown scored two more in the top of the second to go up 4-1. The Huskies came back with one more in the home half of the second when Young reached on catcher's interference and later scored on a
Shen Debaro (Milton, Milton) single.
The Golden Bears scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before the Huskies got an RBI double from Mauro to make the final 7-3.
Bloomsburg goes to 38-4 with the split, while Kutztown goes to 34-13. The Huskies play at IUP tomorrow at 1 p.m.
