BLOOMSBURG-
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead Bloomsburg University to a 6-0 win over Indiana University (PA) in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional 1 Championships on Sunday afternoon at
Jan Hutchinson Field. The Huskies now move on to the Atlantic Super Regional next weekend.
After the Crimson Hawks (38-12) forced a deciding game seven with a dominant 4-0 win in the day's first game, Bloomsburg quickly took control of game two. The Huskies shut out IUP over the first two innings, then got a big double down the left field line from
Nikki Shiko (Shamokin, Southern Columbia) to lead off the third. A ground out moved Shiko over to third before Mauro's double to the gap in left center put the Huskies on the board. A single by
Sam Pientack (Archbald, Valley View) and a catcher's interference call loaded the bases for
Mandy Koch (Dauphin, Central Dauphin), who walked, bringing in a second run.
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia)'s (Catawissa, Southern Columbia)'s single to left brought another runner home, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
IUP threatened in its half of the third, loading the bases with just one out before
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay, Allentown Central Catholic) fanned two straight batters, ending the inning and leaving the Crimson Hawks empty handed.
The Huskies (47-6) got another run in the fourth when Shiko led off with a triple down the line in right.
Danielle Lazorka's (Williamsport, Jersey Shore)'s groundout brought her home, giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless 1.5 innings, Bloomsburg struck again in the sixth with back-to-back doubles from Mauro and Pientack as the Huskies took a five-run lead. An insurance run came in the top of the seventh, as Fisher helped herself with a double to the gap in left. Shiko and Lazorka followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases for Mauro, who picked up her second RBI with a sacrifice fly to left.
Fisher then came back in the seventh, getting IUP 1-2-3 with two ground outs and a strikeout to give the Huskies the six-run victory.
For the Crimson Hawks, pitcher Erin Holloway combined to throw 14 innings on the day, striking out eight. She allowed just two hits and walked one in the opening IUP win.
In addition to Mauro's three hits, Shiko had three of her own with a double and a triple and two runs scored. Pientack and
Casey Massimini (Downingtown, Downingtown West) each added two hits apiece for the Huskies. Fisher, now 32-5 on the season, struck out five and walked none in her complete game win while going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double.
The Huskies advance to play California (PA) in the Atlantic Super Regionals next weekend. The Vulcans (37-12), hosts of the other half of the regional championships, defeated Kutztown 3-2 earlier today. Bloomsburg defeated the Vulcans in the only two games between the teams this year, 3-2 and 7-5 in the PSAC championships.
