Women's Tennis Wins NCAA Regional Opener

SLIPPERY ROCK– Kristen Bonito (Bridgewater, MA, Coyle Cassidy Memorial) and Andrea Malatesta (Berwick, Berwick) won their respective singles matches and played on a winning doubles team Friday afternoon and led second-seeded Bloomsburg to a 5-0 win over third-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan in semifinal action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic 2 Regional women's tennis tournament.

Bonito won a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the No. 5 singles match, while Malatesta reigned by 6-01, 6-0 scores in the No. 6 singles match.

In doubles action, Bonito and partner Katie Hasyn (Lansdale, North Penn) won a 9-7 decision in the No. 2 match while Malatesta and Laura Sullivan (Dingman's Ferry, Delaware Valley)teamed up for an 8-2 in the No. 3 match.

The other Bloomsburg point came via an 8-5 win by the tandem of Emily Palko (McMurray, Peters Township) and Alison Carney (Muncy, Warrior Run)in the No. 1 doubles match.

Bloomsburg (15-5) will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal match between top-seeded Slippery Rock and fifth-seeded Indiana (Pa.) in the regional final Saturday.

The winner of that match earns a berth in the national Round of 16 competition next week in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
