BLOOMSBURG- A successful penalty shot by senior Tim Pfender (Langhorne, Neshaminy)was enough to lift the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team over No. 9 Slippery Rock, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on Friday afternoon.
The first half became a running game for both teams as each team registered 11 shots combined but never threatened the net. Senior Tom Kovack (Croydon, Conwell-Egan Catholic)had three of the Huskies' four shots in the first half, but could not find his spot. The Rock kept freshman goalkeeper Bernie Roell (Douglassville, Daniel Boone) on his toes recording seven shots in the half.
Within the final minute of the first half, Pfender fouled hard in the box, awarding the Rock a penalty kick. Junior Kenneth Fultz sailed his kick high, ending a scoreless first half.
Early in the second frame, The Rock controlled the pace, limiting the Huskies to just one shot in the first half of the period. The Huskies had a solid chance to score, receiving four quick corner kicks late in the half, but Slippery Rock keeper Greg Blum succeeded in fending off Bloomsburg's efforts.
Tensions escalated as the clock wore down and the desperation of both teams manifested in aggressive play. With just less than three minutes to play The Rock's Feehan was whistled for a hit, giving the Huskies a penalty shot. Pfender found the back of the net for the game clinching goal, and the Huskies cruised to their first PSAC match of the season.
The Huskies (2-2) host Lock Haven University in another PSAC match on Saturday, September 18, at 7:30 pm. The Rock (4-1-1) will continue their road trip to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
