Women's Soccer Ties with Chestnut Hill

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG—It was an emotional night for the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team as the squad took on visiting Chestnut Hill College at Sports Stadium on Wednesday evening. Despite outshooting the Griffons 19 to 2, the Huskies were unable to outdo their visiting foes, and the game ended in a 1-1 deadlock after nearly two hours of play.

Before the game, both the Bloomsburg men's and women's soccer teams gathered at midfield for a ceremony to honor the memory of men's player Brian Savage, who tragically passed away last Saturday morning.

The game got off to a slow start, as the teams settled into the early-season match. Despite aggressive play from both squads the Huskies controlled the pace, drawing eight corner kicks and putting up eight shots while holding the Griffins to only one shot on net.

Bloomsburg jumped on the scoreboard early in the second half. BU sophomore Caroline Mountney (Flourtown, Springfield) fed a pass to senior Kelsey Stoka (Langhorne, Neshaminy) near the top of the penalty area. Chestnut Hill keeper Jessica Veazey came out and had seemingly stopped the ball, but Stoka followed her shot as it slipped through Veazey's hands and into the back of the net. After a tense moment as both teams stood uncertain of whether a foul had been committed, the Huskies erupted in celebration as the goal was declared valid and BU took a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins evened the score in 70th minute, as Chestnut Hill freshman Kaelyn Pizarro broke through several BU defenders to get within five yards of the net. Despite the efforts of Bloomsburg net-minder Frances Nicoletti (Haddonfield, NJ, Haddonfield), Pizarro's crossing shot slipped into the bottom corner of the goal, equalizing the game at 1-1.

Both teams made strong efforts in the overtime period to steal the win, but after both extra frames were complete, the score stood, and each team picked up its first tie of the 2010 season. Veazey ended the game with seven saves in net, while Nicoletti stopped just one of the Griffons two shots on goal.

Bloomsburg (1-0-1) travels to Edinboro for its next game on Friday, September 10. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. Chestnut Hill (1-1-1) continues on the road with a game at Caldwell College on Saturday, September 11, with a start-time of 12 p.m.
