Men's Soccer Drops a Close One to Gannon, 4-3

BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team dropped a tight 4-3 game to Gannon University this afternoon.  Junior forward Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) netted the Huskies' first two goals of the game, giving him four goals in Bloomsburg's last two contests.

In the 17th minute of play Shaffer received a long pass from teammate Nick Izzo (Frankford, DE/Indian River) just outside the eighteen.  From there Shaffer ripped a shot that beat the approaching keeper to put the Huskies ahead, 1-0.

Bloomsburg's lead would be short lived as Gannon's Adam Sharbaugh scored back-to-back goals in the 18th and 20th minutes to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 edge.

At the 35:24 mark in the first half Shaffer evened things up at 2-2 as he cleaned up a loose ball in front of the net on a Husky corner kick.  Shaffer's late goal was his seventh of the season.

Just five minutes later Gannon reclaimed their lead as Faycal Benjelloun scored an unassisted goal.  Gannon's goal put the Golden Knights ahead 3-2 going into the half.

BU's Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) was prompted to go in net for the Huskies to start the second half after watching the first from the bench.  Roell came up with several big saves in the half, robbing the Golden Knights of several scoring opportunities.

Late in the game the Huskies pressed hard for a score and got one as Fran Miller (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) drilled a header with 6:21 to play in the game.  Miller's goal was set up by a previous header from Nate Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) that missed but left Miller with the scoring chance.

With the game coming to a close it looked as though the Huskies were going to force overtime until Gannon's Robbie Bennett sneaked his way through two defenders for a one-on-one with BU keeper Roell.  From there Bennett buried a shot into the right side of the net for the game winner with just one minute left to play.

For the Huskies Ramon Lobo Jr. (Dillsburg/Northern) got the start and made five saves in 45 minutes of play while allowing three goals.  Roell came in the second half to make three saves.  Their counterpart from Gannon, Jason Barbarino came up with four saves in 90 minutes of play.

With the loss BU drops to 3-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in PSAC play.  Bloomsburg will look to bounce back as they travel to take on Mercyhurst in PSAC play on Saturday, October 8.  Game-time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Erie, PA.
