BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University running back
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) rushed for three touchdowns and caught another as he led the number two ranked Huskies (6-0, 3-0 PSAC East) to a 45-10 win over the Wolves of Cheyney (1-5, 0-3 PSAC East). With today's win, head coach Danny Hale earned his 200th career coaching win, placing him fifth amongst active coaches in NCAA Division II football.
Danny Hale on win 200: “It feels really good, especially when I saw it was on homecoming and to be able to share it with all these past players. A lot of the past players came back. This team is special and the character of this team is real special and it's a good milestone to be over now. Actually I am going to enjoy 200 tonight and tomorrow I'm thinking of 201.”
Hale goes on “it's extremely special when you get a chance to share it with a lot of other people that have been impacted from the program, especially during Homecoming. We had a lot of people back and it was really special.”
Cheyney started the game with the ball but would not keep it for long as
Terrell Oglesby (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) picked off Cheyney's Chris Anderson on the fifth play of the game at the Bloomsburg 44 yard line. Oglesby returned the interception 43 yards to the Cheyney 13.
From there
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) got the ball on two straight handoffs and would eventually score from four yards out. Dan Fisher connected on the point after to put Bloomsburg ahead, 7-0 with 12:36 to play in the first quarter.
The Wolves would go three-and-out on their next possession and punt the ball back the Huskies. Bloomsburg would then orchestrate a nine play, 68 yard drive that was capped by a 15 yard run by Quiteh. Fisher made good on the point after to put BU ahead, 14-0 with 7:50 to play in the first quarter. Quiteh's 15 yarder gave him enough yards to move into eighth place on Bloomsburg's all-time rushing list.
Cheyney started their next drive with good field position at their own 40 after BU's kick-off dribbled out of bounce. On third and two, Nahum Purdie broke out a 32-yard run that ended with BU's
Justin Rivera (Bethlehem/Liberty) stripping Purdie of the ball at the Bloomsburg 16. Oglesby recovered the loose ball at the 12, where the Huskies started their third drive of the game.
The Huskies would then drive 76 yards on 12 plays that resulted in a Fisher field goal from 29 yards out. With 1:02 in the first quarter, the Huskies held a commanding 17-0 lead.
After a three-and-out by the Wolves, Bloomsburg started their next drive at their own 23. On Bloomsburg's sixth play of the drive
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) would see all green as he scored from 53 yards out to put BU ahead, 24-0 with 11:35 left in the half.
On Cheyney's next possession Tyler Wilkinson hit a 34 yard field go to cut the Huskies lead to 21 points at the 6:03 mark in the second quarter.
Bloomsburg responded on their next drive with five play, 60 yard drive that was capped by a
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) 26-yard touchdown pass to Quiteh. On the play Quiteh was almost forced out of bounds but managed to keep his balance as he tip toed his way into the end zone for this third score of the afternoon. Fisher hit the PAT to put Bloomsburg up 31-3 entering the half.
To start the second half
Ryan Dickerson (Harleysville/Souderton) would take the kickoff back 33 yards to the Cheyney 46 yard line, giving the Huskies great field position. From there Bloomsburg rushed the ball three straight times before Carey hit
Glenn Hutton Jr. (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) for a 29 yard completion, bringing the ball to the Cheyney three yard line. Quiteh got the handoff on the very next play and he would find room on the left side for his fourth score of the game. Fisher hit the point after to make it 38-3 with 12:41 remaining in the third.
Bloomsburg's defense would force another three-and-out on Cheyney's next possession, forcing another punt from Wilkinson. Bloomsburg was forced to punt for the first time on their next series as their drive stalled after seven plays and 32 yards. Neither team would score for the remainder of the third quarter as the Huskies held maintained their 38-3 lead entering the fourth.
Cheyney would get their first touchdown of the afternoon as they marched 80 yards on eight plays, resulting in a Justin Watkins rushing touchdown. Jewel Jones came in for the extra point, making it a 38-10 game in favor of the Huskies.
Bloomsburg responded immediately as
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) ran the kickoff back 54 yards to the Cheyney 22 yard line. A personal foul penalty on Cheyney moved the football half the distance to the goal, putting BU at the 11 yard line.
Kareem Steplight (Philadelphia/Frankford) rushed the ball in from 11 yards out on the next play to put Bloomsburg up for good, 45-10.
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) finished today by completing 10 of 12 passes for 145 yards and threw one touchdown.
Ryan Dickerson (Harleysville/Souderton) made three catches for 30 yards while
Tyler Guise (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) caught two for 27.
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) caught one pass for 26 yards and a score.
On the ground
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) got the ball 13 times for 101 yards and scored one touchdown from 53 yards out. Quiteh rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries and scored three times while
Kareem Steplight (Philadelphia/Frankford) added 43 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Defensively
Sean Clift (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic),
Andre Glover (Pottstown/Pottsgrove), and
Drew Siegfried (Blue Bell/Bishop McDevitt) led the way for the Huskies with five tackles each.
Justin Rivera (Bethlehem/Liberty) forced a fumbled in addition to making two tackles.
Terrell Oglesby (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) made three tackles, one for a loss, recovered a fumble, and intercepted a pass for 43 yards.
With today's win Bloomsburg improves to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the PSAC East. The Huskies will be home again next weekend as they host the Red Raiders of Shippensburg on Saturday, October 15th in a 1:00 p.m. game.
