BLOOMSBURG—
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a game-high 28 points, but it wasn't enough as Edinboro defeated Bloomsburg 98-73 in women's college basketball action Sunday afternoon. The loss knocked the Huskies from the ranks of the unbeaten as they suffered their first defeat of the year.
Edinboro jumped out to the early lead 8-0 before the Huskies
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scored on a driving layup to get BU on the board. The Fighting Scots then extended their lead to 23-4 with 14:34 to go in the half before the Huskies began chipping away at the deficit.
The Huskies went on a 12-5 run with Wieller scoring eight points for the Huskies, including a pair of back-to-back three pointers that cut the lead to 12, 28-16, with 10:53 to play in the half.
Edinboro would push the lead to 20 points on three occasions in the half, the last coming with 5:23 to go before the break when Kiara Brown hit a three-pointer making it 49-29.
The Huskies, though, rallied and outscored the Fighting Scots 19-4 over the final five minutes to go to the locker room down by just five points, 53-48. Freshman
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) started the comeback with a pair of free throws for two of her six points in the rally, while Wieller scored eight points for Bloomsburg. The Huskies also forced four turnovers and limited the Fighting Scots to just 1-7 shooting from the floor.
In the opening seconds of the second half, Kiara Brown, Edinboro's leading scorer, picked up her fifth foul and the Huskies trimmed the margin down to four points, 53-49,when
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) hit one of two free throws. But the Fighting Scots, the defending PSAC champions, used a 17-1 run over the next six minutes to regain a 20-point edge, 70-50.
The Huskies did get back to within 16 points two different times, the last coming at 9:44 to play when
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) hit a jumper to make it 72-56. But Edinboro pushed the lead to above 20 and came away with the 25-point victory.
Wieller finished with 28 points, one shy of her career high, while Simmons scored a career-best 15 points, including 10 of 10 from the free throw line, for Bloomsburg, now 4-1, 1-1 in the PSAC East.
Edinboro, 2-0, 2-0 in the PSAC West, got 21 points from Renee Brown and 20 points from Micki Cerchiaro, while three other players scored 13 points each.
Bloomsburg will be idle till November 28 when the Huskies take on Lincoln University at 5:30 p.m.
