KUTZTOWN—Running back
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) rushed for 151 yards but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University football team (8-2, 5-2 PSAC East) fell 52-14 to Kutztown University (9-1, 6-1 PSAC East). Today's loss marks the first time Bloomsburg has lost to the Golden Bears since the 1992 season. With the win Kutztown will represent the East in next weekend's PSAC Championship game.
Quiteh's 151 rushing yards gives him 1,072 on the season. It is the second year in a row he has gone for over 1,000 yards in a single season and the first time in Bloomsburg history that two running backs have rushed for 1,000 yards in the same season. Today's game also marked the first time in his career that a Danny Hale coached team has lost to the Golden Bears.
On a day when something could go wrong it did for the Bloomsburg football team. The Huskies gave turned the ball over three times in addition to a missed 41 yard field goal. For Kutztown, everything seemed to go their way, converting on long third down attempts and moving the ball at will. Whenever the Huskies got pressure in the backfield, Kutztown quarterback Kevin Morton would scramble for positive yardage.
Bloomsburg started with the ball but quarterback
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) was picked off on the first play from scrimmage on a deep pass attempt. The interception led to a Kutztown 43 yard field goal from Jack Ruggieri at the 12:27 mark of the first quarter.
Following a Bloomsburg punt, Kutztown put together a 12 play, 59 yard drive that was capped by a one yard touchdown run from Robbie Frey. A big play on the drive was a fake field goal attempt that resulted in a first down.
On the Huskies ensuing possession, running back
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) escaped for a 46 yard run with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. On fourth and goal from the one yard line,
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) dove over the pile, narrowly breaking the plane for a touchdown. The Huskies now trailed 10-7.
The Golden Bears would go up by 17 after as quarterback Kevin Morton hit Josh Smith for 16 and 65 yard touchdown passes. Bloomsburg was unable to score for the remainder of the half, trailing 24-7 entering halftime.
There was limited scoring the third quarter with Kutztown putting up the only points on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Morton to Erik Frazier. The score put KU ahead, 31-7 with 5:10 to play in the third.
Bloomsburg opened the fourth quarter on the receiving end of a punt but
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) fumble resulted in a Kutztown recovery inside the Bloomsburg 20. A minute and 16 seconds later Morton made it 38-7 on a rushing touchdown, his fourth touchdown of the afternoon.
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) threw his first touchdown pass of the day to cut into the Kutztown lead, 38-14.
Ryan Dickerson (Harleysville/Souderton) made the reception for his fourth touchdown of the year. The Golden Bears responded with an 83 yard kickoff return touchdown to go back up by 31 points with 10:06 to play.
With 4:44 left in the game Josh Smith caught his third touchdown pass of the game, this time it was 38 yard catch from Morton. Morton's TD pass was his fourth of the day and fifth overall touchdown. The Golden Bears would go on to win the game 52-14.
Defensively for Huskies,
Dan Haverstock (York/West York) and
Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) led the way with eight tackles a piece while
Vince Browning (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and
Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) chipped in seven and six respectively.
The Huskies will look to end the two game skid as they host Lock Haven in the final regular season game on Saturday, November 12. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Redman Stadium in Bloomsburg, PA.
