Women's Basketball Team Clinches PSAC East Title With Win

Huskies Down ESU 85-54 on Wednesday

EAST STROUDSBURG—Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a game-high 25 points as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team clinched first place in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division with an 85-54 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.

The PSAC East title is the first for the Huskies since the 2000-01 season. Bloomsburg, now 20-5, 12-1 in PSAC East, will host a PSAC quarterfinal playoff game against Kutztown on Tuesday, March 1 at a time to be determined. Should the Huskies win the quarterfinal game they would host the PSAC women's final four on March 4-5 at the Nelson Field House.

It was a slow start for the Huskies with the game tied at 4-4 two and a half minutes into the game. From there the Huskies went on 22-1 run to take control of the game and led 26-5 with 9:20 to go in the half. Leading the way on the big run for the Huskies was Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) who scored six straight to start the rally. Gallagher and Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) both added five points in the eight minute outburst.

Bloomsburg later took its biggest lead of the half,36-6, on two free throws by Wieller before going into halftime leading 42-20.

In the second half saw the Huskies continued to build on its lead and led by as many as 35 points on two occasions before settling for the 31 point victory. The win was the 10th straight for the Huskies.

Along with Gallagher scoring 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds, Wieller finished with 19 points with Noack and Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scoring 12 each. East Stroudsburg falls to 5-20, 2-11 in the PSAC East, got 17 points from Cyara Woodridge and 13 points from Brittany McLain.

The PSAC playoff berth is the 22nd in school history and the second straight for the Huskies under head coach Bill Cleary.

Bloomsburg will close out its regular season on Saturday visiting West Chester at 1 p.m.
