BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team combined to hit eight home runs in its doubleheader sweep of Clarion on Wednesday with the Huskies winning 6-1 and 16-1 in five innings.
In game one the Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) doubled and later scored on two-out, third strike passed ball that kept the inning alive.
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) then homered to left center field putting the Huskies up 3-0.
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) then followed with a triple and scored on a single by
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore).
In the third
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by
Emily Young (Nescopeck/Central Columbia). After Clarion got a run back in the top of the fourth, Kuhns hit a deep shot to center field. The Clarion outfielder had a long run, but could not hang on to the ball allowing Kuhns to race home without a throw for the inside the park homer.
Pitcher
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) did the rest retiring the final eight hitters she faced, including striking out the side in the seventh to end the game. Fisher finished with 11 strikeouts, no walks and gave up just six hits and one unearned run.
In game two Clarion jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. The Huskies, though, wasted little time coming back. Pientack had an RBI single in the inning for Bloomsburg's first run with Pietack scoring on a two-run homer by
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) on a ball that hit off the top of the fence and went over.
Bloomsburg made it 5-1 in the second inning when
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) hit a two-run triple plating
Lyndsay Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) and
Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia).
The Huskies batted around in the third inning, plus five, belting five homers in the inning. Pientack led off the inning with a homer. Leach then doubled and went to third on
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley)'s single. Kuhns then hit a sac fly scoring Leach. Busler then singled in a run to make it 8-1. After a pop up for out number two, Lazorka drilled a shot to deep centerfield that hit off the Huskies scoreboard knocking out one of the lights on the board for a three-run homer and an 11-1 lead. Baer then followed with a solo shot followed by Pientack hitting her second homer of the inning for a 13-1 lead. Leach made it four straight homers with her second homer of the game. Later in the inning
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) had an RBI hit to make it 15-1 at the end of three innings.
Bloomsburg added another run in the bottom of the fourth with Fredell getting a bases loaded infield single to make it 16-1.
Lazorka finished 2-2 with four RBI, while Pientack and Leach both went 3-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and two home runs.
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) went four innings to earn the win, her 10th of the season.
Bloomsburg, now 19-3, 4-0 in the PSAC Central, will host Mansfield on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
