CLERMONT, FL—
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) went a combined 4-7 with two home runs and four runs batted in to lead the 8th-ranked Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of two games on Monday. The Huskies beat St. Joseph's of Indiana, 8-0 in five innings, then beat Grand Valley 10-2 in the day's second game.
In game one Pientack went 2-3 with a homer and two runs batted to back the three-hit pitching of
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) as the Huskies won 8-0 in five innings. With the Huskies leading 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Pientack hit a two-run shot to make it a 4-0 game. Bloomsburg went on to add four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win on the mercy rule.
Along with Pientack,
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) was 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Paine went 2-2 with a solo homer, two runs scored and two runs batted in. In the circle Paine allowed just three hits in winning her third game of the season, while walking two and striking out six.
In game two the Huskies beat Grand Valley 10-2 with Pientack going 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Pientack also hit a two-run shot in the sixth as Bloomsburg opened up a 7-2 lead at that point.
With Bloomsburg trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, the Huskies started their rally when
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) singled to lead off the inning. After
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) sacrificed Baer to second,
Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) followed with a double with Baer having to stop at third. Baer then scored when
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) reached on a fielder's choice putting runners at the corners.
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) then followed with a three-run homer to put the Huskies on top 4-1.
Later with the score 5-2 in favor of the Huskies, Pientack homered to center field scoring
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) who had singled to make it 7-2. In the top of the seventh Hampton singled home one run with Kuhns adding a two-run homer to make the final 10-2.
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) went the distance for the Huskies walking one and striking out four.
Bloomsburg, 4-2, plays against Belmont Abbey and Northern State on Tuesday.
