MILLERSVILLE--The Bloomsburg University softball team ran its winning streak to 17 games with a sweep of Millersville University on Saturday. The Huskies beat Millersville 5-0 in game one and then hung on for a 5-4 win in game two.
In game one
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) allowed just four hits and
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) went 3-4 with two RBI to lead Bloomsburg to the win. Fisher scattered the four hits and had two runners on base only once in the game. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Locked in a scoreless game the Huskies broke through in the top of the fourth inning when
Emily Young (Nescopeck/Central Columbia) hit a two-run homer for the Huskies. Bloomsburg made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth when
Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) walked to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Mauro.
The Huskies added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) hit a solo homer for a 4-0 lead. Then later in the inning, Neyhard doubled and scored on a single by Mauro.
In game two the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead, then, held on for a 5-4 win. Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mauro singled to lead off the game and went to second when
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) reached on an error. After a strike out,
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) singled home Mauro with the game's first run.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when Mauro doubled home
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) and
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock).
Millersville got one run back in the bottom of the third inning when Casey Coker hit a solo homer. The Huskies though answered with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) singled to lead off the inning with
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) coming in to pinch run. Kuhns doubled to put runners at second and third. After a ground out, Lazorka reached on an error to load the bases.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then singled home Moir to make 4-1. After a fielder's choice out at home plate,
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) singled home Lazorka for a 5-1 Huskies lead.
The Marauders closed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer from Allison Chew. Millersville followed with two more singles to put the go-ahead run at the plate, but Bloomsburg starter
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) got the final two outs to keep it 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh Millersville got a one out single and an RBI double to make it 5-4. Fisher then came in and got the final two outs to record the save.
Mauro went a combined 6-9 in the doubleheader with four RBI, while Neyhard went 3-6 in the two games.
Bloomsburg, 21-3, will host Mansfield on Sunday at 1 p.m.
