BU-KUTZTOWN
BLOOMSBURG-Shivaun Fisher threw two complete games to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to winner's bracket final in the opening round of the 2011 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Softball championships. The Huskies beat Gannon 4-0 and Kutztown 9-2 on Thursday.
The Huskies will face Kutztown on Friday at 10 a.m. at
Jan Hutchinson Field. Bloomsburg needs only to beat the Golden Bears once, while Kutztown will have to defeat Bloomsburg twice to move on to next week's championship finals.
The Huskies, who wore pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, played their first game of the day against Gannon, which had dropped its opening round game to Kutztown, 9-1. Fisher was in control from the start and did not allow a hit through the first five innings. Her only blemish was a one-out walk in the second inning. At one point she retired 10 straight batters with only one ball leaving the infield.
Fisher gave up her first hit of the game to lead off the sixth and also gave up a lead-off single in the seventh. She ended the game with nine strike outs and just one walk.
Offensively the Huskies took care of Fisher getting a run in the third and fourth innings and two more in the sixth. In the third
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) doubled to lead off with pinch-runner
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) coming around to score on
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore)'s single.
In the fourth
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) walked to lead off the inning and later scored when Lori Neyard grounded into a double play. Bloomsburg tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Baer. After a ground out moved Baer to second,
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) grounded out. On the play Baer raced from second to third with the throw over from the first baseman going wide and allowing Baer to score.
Against Kutztown Fisher retired the Golden Bears in order to start the game. Bloomsburg then scored three times in the bottom of the first to take control of the game. Mauro doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Baer. Pientack then doubled home two runs and later scored herself on a single by Leach.
Kutztown got two runs back in the top of the second before the Huskies responded with a run in the bottom of the second to make it 4-2.
Bloomsburg started to put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hampton had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double, to make it a 6-2 game. The Huskies added three more runs in the sixth with Pientack getting an RBI single and Neyahrd a two-run triple.
While the Bloomsburg bats were hot, Fisher was hot in the circle retiring the final 10 batters she faced and getting a strikeout to end the game. She finished with eight strikeouts, one walk and just four hits allowed.
Offensively Pientack was 3-4 with three RBI, while Neyhard and Hampton each drove in a pair of runs.
Bloomsburg goes to 30-5 with the win, while Kutztown falls to 37-12.
