BLOOMSBURG—
Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) went a combined 3-4 and drove in three runs to lead the 14th-ranked Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of Mansfield on Sunday by scores of 3-0 and 5-1. The Huskies have now 19 straight games.
In the opener the Huskies and Mountaineers were scoreless through the first four innings with Mansfield pitcher Melissa Baer and Bloomsburg's
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) both working out of trouble. Mansfield left a pair of runners stranded in the first, while the Huskies left six runners stranded.
Bloomsburg finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth.
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a sac bunt. After a ground out moved Mauro to third, she scored on a long triple by
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) to make it 1-0.
The Huskies added some insurance runs in the sixth inning when
Emily Young (Nescopeck/Central Columbia) singled to lead off.
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) then came into run for Young and went to second on a single by
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley). A bunt by
Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) moved the runners to second and third. Hampton then came up as a pinch hitter and doubled to right center scoring both Moir and Fredell.
Fisher then closed out the game in the top of the seventh retiring the Mounties in order for her 11th win of the season. She allowed just three hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
In game two, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) doubled to lead off the inning, then, scored on a single by
Emily Young (Nescopeck/Central Columbia).
Bloomsburg made it 3-0 with two runs in the fourth. Hampton doubled to lead off the inning with Moir pinch-running. After the next two batters were retired, Mauro drilled a home run to center field extending the lead.
In the fifth inning the Huskies made it 5-0 with Young getting a bunt single scoring one run and Hampton singling home a run.
Bloomsburg pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) lost her bid for a shutout with two outs in the seventh when Jordan Rishel hit a home run.
Paine finished with eight strikeouts and one walk, while allowing just four hits.
Bloomsburg, 23-3, 6-0 in the PSAC Central, plays at IUP on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
